My question is whether it would be OK to use Mobil 1 Truck/SUV 5W40 in my Subaru 2.5 turbo engine. Many say that a little more viscosity is good during summer months in Subarus, and I wasn't sure if the M1 5W40 was OK for standard gas engine use. I assume so, but wanted the experts' advice.

Thanks.

does your manual give a range of viscosities related to temperature? if so, then your answer is straightforward... if now, then others will chme in.

JMH

Actually, the question was more along the lines of whether the "Truck/SUV" labeling was just marketing hype, or whether it shouldn't be used in regular cars for some reason. I think the weight is OK.

Yeah it would be a fine oil for your car. It is duel rated for gas and diesel engines. It was one of the best oil's from exxon/mobil. If you want something simular try Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40.

It's fine for use in your Subaru, but I question whether you really need to run a 5W-40 oil in your Subaru. Is your Subaru turbo-charged? If so, then it may be a good choice (although I think you'd be better served with German Castrol 0W-30...I run this in my COBB Stage 1 STi). If your Subaru is normally aspirated, M1 5w30 or 10w30 would be a better choice versus M1 5W-40, IMHO.

Dac what oil do you use currently? Are you having any oil usage concerns with the weight you are using now? IMO if it does not use oil stay with the current grade but use synthetic to protect the turbo after shutdown so it wont cook the oil and sludge up blocking the oil passages.

Currently using M1 5W30. Works fine; was just looking to see if something might be better.

Unless you have access to some old stock, the Truck and SUV currently on shelves is 5w30. The 5w40 product is called "Turbo Diesel Truck". It also has an SL rating, and is the same product as Mobil 1 Delvac 5w-40
