The car in question is am 04 Subaru Outback with the 2.5 four banger. This engine is known for not being too hard on it's oil. On my previous change, I was running PP in the thing, and it did not start turning dark until I had over 2000 miles on it. This time I have M1 T&SUV, and it started getting dark at about 1000 miles. Whassup with this, experts?

I also run M1 in my old 88 IROC Camaro (injected 5.0), and it turns dark pretty fast in the SBC.

Dark is usually a factor of heat, but also other factors... Was the engine in different ambient conditions?

Turning dark early could be a bad thing (if it's oxidation - which is unlikely w/ a synthetic). Or, turning dark early could be a good thing - shows the combustion products, etc are in the oil and not on the engine parts.

I've used M1 and Schaeffers in my Sienna. M1 would stay relatively light in color till after 4k. Schaeffers got darker much quicker. I'm now in the camp that thinks darker sooner is better.

People have, since it's earliest release, noticed Platinum staying lighter longer than other synth oils. Whether there is something to worry about, cheer, or ignore has never really been figured out.

thermally-activated aditive pack. Can be different than what is in PP, and is irrelevant.
