M1 or PU?

I've used both. My engines didn't blow up. I'm a Pennzoil person simply because it's a bit cheaper at WM. But I always look at M1 and when 5w20 ever gets cheaper than PP's version I'll go M1. Doesn't matter to me.

+1.

I've used lots of M1 over the years, although I have but one quart of it in the stash at the moment.
I've had good results, based upon UOAs, with PP in two cars.
Since Ultra is basically PP+, I'd choose it myself over M1.
There are even Euro flavors of Ultra, although you'll never see them on a shelf anywhere, as opposed to the readily available M1 0W-40.
I also like the fact that Pennzoil, when they were a site sponsor, was very forthcoming with information on basestocks used, while XOM will not give a straight answer as to which M1 flavors are Grp III and which are Grp IV.

For Pennzoil's 20wt and 30wt oils I definitely prefer PP to PU.
Great UOAs, very shear resistant and grade for grade PP is lighter with higher VIs. Plus it's usually cheaper.
Compared to M1 I generally prefer PP but it depends on the grade.
M1 has a lot more oils from which to choose.

Never thought of it that way.
I've always liked PP, and had two really clean UOAs of it on oil drained from two old cars.
There are a lot more grades and flavors of M1 to choose from, though and if you read between the lines, you can identify which are mostly Grp IV, if that matters.
Maybe those who want a thicker oil in either a twenty or a thirty should select Ultra?
Although given everything you've posted, as well as the evidence of the UOAs posted in that forum, I'm not sure how many applications would really benefit from a thicker oil.

On the base stock issue. Mobil Super syn is grp 3 according to Mobil tech. M1 is a blend of several base stocks including grp3, PAO and ester, and other stocks. Mobil tech told me even though M1 is a blend of several base stocks(and the differant M1 grades have differant types of blends)they consider it to be in the grp4 catagory. Of course they will not tell the exact blends as no company will.

Unlike XOM, SOPUS, when a site sponsor, was right up front about their oils using Grp III basestocks.
An oil is either Grp IV, or a blend with a significant proportion of Grp III, which XOM likes to call "Visom".
There is nothing to consider beyond that.
You can spot the M1 flavors that contain a relatively greater proportion of Grp IV by looking at the specs in detail.
Cold specs are a real clue, as are NOACK and VI.

at 3-5k go get a bunch of napa synthetic for $3.49 a quart, and save some money.

PYB if you're going to go only 3K miles on it. I think a 5+ quart jug at Walmart is under $15 in some places as opposed to the $25 M1 is. Save $10 an oil change over the course of the average of 12K miles a year is $40 or $3.33 a month! You could almost get an extra gallon of gas a month
