M1 5w40 TD or RTS 5w40 which is better?

I'd venture that the M1 is slightly 'tougher', but as said, the RTS is definetly cheaper. So unless you are REALLY pushing your intervals, RTS will do fine!

Yes and no. Its Shell's XHVI base stock, which is much more processed than regular old Group III. XHVI is truly, unquestionably, synthetic in the sense that the "dino" molecules are disassembled and then put back together into a highly consistent product. If XHVI is "dino oil" then so is plastic ;-)

I'd think you'd be hard pressed to find much practical difference in the performance of the 2 oils.

+1 Completely agree!

Head to head, I'd put the TD out front ..but the price difference usually neutralizes it in gasoline use. I haven't used either post Katrina, but $:$ you don't have to get as much out of RTS to make it pay. Both are hopelessly overkill for most gasoline applications.

Used both in the Jeep 4.0 at 115,000 miles. I think Mobil 1 TDT is better, even though I like Shell's price.
