Hi all,

I'm planning to move to Synthetic M1 oil after 60k ml. I'm using 10W30 Penzoil. By manual is 5W30. I'm in SF Bay Area, where I don't see anything below 60 F. So I'm using 10W30 to get better MPG.

Which one should I use 5W30 or 10W30 or etc.?

thanks.

I am now using M1 5w30 in both of my Hondas.
In my '00 Odyssey I switched to M1 this summer at 55K miles. In my '03 Civic, I switched at the first oil change, 4K miles, also this summer. I am in Tennessee, so my climate will be colder than yours in the winter.

In theory, 5w30 should give you slightly better mileage than 10w30, but with your climate you will probably not see a difference.

If you do a lot of start-ups in your daily travels, I would think that 5w30 would pump-up a little faster than 10w30. To me, this is important in the winter. But again, in your climate and with M1 you have a lot of margin, so this is probably not critical.

Best Wishes as you motor along!

Especially in a tough Honda, I suggest the 5w30. I think it was stated on here that the Mobil-1 5w30 is a tad thicker at operating temp than the 10w30. So, better flow at startup and a tad thicker at operating temp, sure the 5w30 seems like a great choice!

Both the 10w30 and 5w30 Mobil 1 are the same viscosity at 100c, which is 10.0 cst.

Hey,

I agree with SWS. IF you do alot start up and short trips, 5w30 would be the way to go. Again, like some of the others have said, 10w30 would be perfectly fine in CA.

0w30 is for really fast start up protection in the cold, jmo I would stick with either 5w30 or 10w30. You should be fine either way,,,,AR

I wouldn't use the 0w30 - Its not necessary and will have more of a tendency to thin out. Very little difference between 5w30 and 10w30. In your climate I probably would go with the 10W.

which one is better for MPG? 5W or 10W?

Someone told me that 10W is better for MPG in warm / hot CA. Is it true? Or it's has nothing to do with MPG?

Thank you.
