You guys have me wondering if I should run 20w50 too. However, my Taurus is backspec'd to 5w20, although I pretty much run 10w30 sometime 5w30 in it full time. Typically the 10w30 is the "middle of the road" stuff, and very popular, so I can find it relatively cheap.

That being said I might check out sales on the M1 15w50 if I see any. I think I could get away with 20w50 in the summer with it being over 100 degrees outside, but there are some days in the winter I would be worried about it. I might do a little blend with 1qt M1 10w30 4qt M1 20w50 eventually and see how it does.

Perhaps I should start a spreadsheet and make notes on gas mileage, filters, and additives. Like an ongoing experiment.

Interesting thread.

I ran 15W-50 M1 in an old Honda Accord and got some of the best mileage I had with that particular vehicle (40mpg in sustained highway driving during the summer). Most of the time I got about 35mpg on the highway with the car..

Went by one Walmart during lunch near work to check out prices on synthetic and dino in 50 weight, then another near my tonight.

Right now Im going to stick to what is in my stockpile, 5w30 and 10w30 cause I cant see paying almost $4 a quart for Dino after tax.

If yall see a sale for 50 weight oil please post it. I am curious.

M1 15W50 (silver cap) is actually a very thin 50 wt oil. Shake around a bottle and you wouldn`t think it was a 50 wt oil in that bottle, but more like a 10W30. Thickest 50 wt oil I`ve ever seen is RP. I`ve always gotten the smoothest and quietest cold weather startups on thicker oils. Back when I had my 3000GT,it would make a hellacious racket when I would start it in freezing temps with a 10W30. I bumped it up to a 10W40 and freezing morning startups were silent.

M1 15W50 I feel is some VERY good oil. I did the good ole layman`s freezer test with it one time and after all day in the freezer,it shook around in the bottle as if it were at room temperature.

Can`t wait for my two M1 rebates to become valid!

A dose of Lucas or STP added to your favorite oil?

I don't think they're doing away with 15W-50, the the EP version...

But one could always use Amsoil's 15w40 HDEO or 20W-50.

That is correct, the regular M1 15W-50 will remain, only 15W-50 EP is being discontinued. Probably not coincidently, this comes not long after most of the EP line has undergone a formula change so that it could be manufacturer approved.

Perhaps, but the EP version was used by people with Motorcycles and those with older flat-tappet engines, no? I know most people that used it was because it was easy to get, not mail order or specialty-shop only.
