Say, perchance, I just happened to pick up a case of SN rated M1 0w40 for about $3.30/quart....think this oil could go 10K-12K in a NA Subaru engine?

A lot of the specs the M1 0w-40 meet are long drain specs. For example the Volkswagen specs it meets is ran for 10k intervals as per Volkswagen.

I'd say it is designed for long drains and could easily do it.

At least 10K easily. Its a top-tier oil and IMO, of the best that Exxon/Mobil produces.

A Fram 'Ultra' filter (WalMart) would be a suitable filter, and cost less than $9 at WalMart.

Absolutely- go with a synthetic media filter. The Fram Ultra is the cheapest entry into that technology, and is actually very good. Other choices you can typically buy right off the shelf are Purolator Synthetic and Royal Purple. Amsoil and others sell them, but not typical parts-store stock.

Depends on operating conditions, IMO. It's possible though.

As so many have mentioned, more than likely yes. Is this a yearly OCI or were you planning to run the oil much longer? If these miles are mainly short distance and then definitely have an UOA done.

This would be tested after 1 year, which is 9-12k for me. Depending on how it looks, I may go for a 15k run if a UOA supports it.

Most of my driving is highway, although there is frequent rush hour stop and go traffic conditions.

Car has a 5 quart sump, and seems fairly easy on most oils, factory OCI is 7500 miles/7.5 months. I've run a Pure1 oil filter for a year before, but it was for a lower use application; it physically looked fine at that time, so I may grab one of my Pure1's for this. Or may go get a heavier duty filter.

You most likely can go 10k with that oil and synthetic filter combo. But, I would recommend doing a UOA at 7.5k first to see how the oil is doing. I would not blindly do a 12k OCI without proof it will be good to go....

+1

That Subie, with mostly highway miles, can go 15k miles on that M1 0W-40 easy, that stuff is stout. With a Purolator Classic filter too. PureOne just makes you feel better and is easier to grip. I'm assuming the engine isn't already a sludgemaster and is reasonably clean inside. These oils can take a lot more abuse than most people tend to give them. As always, check your level and keep topped off.

M1 0W40 should be good for 15K mile OCI easily, and there were good UOAs to prove it. It's a euro car oil, most of which are designed for relatively extended OCIs.

Euro specs are for euro size sumps. Saville oranges to Fuji apples...

That's too far for a blind oci. Dump it at the sooner of the the factory interval,or,when it gets black.
