Gentlemen and ladies;

Would Mobil 1 0-20 AFE be a good option for the 4.0L Jeep? Intriguing TBN #s. Have a good day.

If it's spec'd for 0w20 or 5w20 it would be an excellent choice.
I wouldn't use it in a 4.0 which is spec'd for thicker oil.

Thanks PBM; I was thinking of throwing a quart of Lucas Synthetic stabilizer. I heard bad stuff about it, but - "how bad could it be if everyone's using it"?!

Hey ARMY, how is your UOA looking with the M1 0w40? I had bad results (double the iron of other oils) using M1 0w30.

4.0's like and spec thicker oil AFAIK. So there would be no benefit going that thin IMO. Just go with M1 5w30 or 0w40. Thats thin enough for that engine. May tick or be noisy tho. Try PP 5w30 if the engine is noisy on M1.

No on 0w20 for the 4.0. Especially if you're just gonna pollute it with an oil thickener with no additives (Lucas).

The 4.0 is clearly spec'd for a 30 grade oil and many 4.0 owners even like 40's. If you want to run something "thin" in the 4.0, try a 5w30 with a high VI and low HTHS like Quaker State Ultimate Durability. That's as far as I'd push it.

I had luck in my oil 4.0 using regular M1 5-30 years ago, but did not have a UOA done...didn't even know what that was years ago. Personally, if I had the 4.0 now and it was aged some, I am a fan of HDEO and think that is a perfect fit for this engine.

I don't think I would use that in that engine, no. I'd use Mobil 1 High Mileage. Those engines seem to like more ZDP and viscosity.

Buy the proper weight. If a synthetic the 10W30 year round should be fine as should 5W30.

Stay away from oil additives. That includes MMO. If you want better lubrication, buy better oil.

Try rotella, my buddy uses it in his 4.0. The motor had a cam bearing noise issue with standard 30/40 weight oils. The rotella (15-40) seems to make his engine run very smoothly.

Since you live just south of the arctic circle(j/k) I would probably try t6 in it.

I wouldn't use 0w20 in a chipped 4.0L with 160K on it (or any other 4.0L).

Sopus oils tend to run quiet in this engine. I have Q-Horsepower 5W30 in my trail rig and it runs well, even upside down.

RT6 is a cheap synthetic that shows great wear numbers in a 4.0. I read numerous times on here that 0w-30AFE had bad wear numbers on 4.0s.

As for "too thin". .. I'm running a mix of 5w-20 and 5w30 in my 4.0 until spring. Mainly because it's what I had laying around. I'll be switching back to RT6 in the spring.

I use M1 0w20 AFE in my Ram spec'd for an Xw20 oil.

The 4.0, however, was spec'd for an Xw30 and experientially (mine and many others well publicized on Jeep forums) does well on Xw40 HDEOs. No way would I use 0w20AFE in a 4.0. If you want a solid but thinner startup oil, M1 0w40, Rotella T6 5w40, or the rumored new T6 0w40 would be a better choice. But you don't really want to go too thin at operating temp on a 4.0

FWIW, both my 4.0's get Rotella T6 5w40 or M1 0w40.

And besides that, NOTHING you do will help the gas mileage of a 4.0 Jeep... that's another well-documented characteristic of the 4.0 :-/

I'm doing the same thing, a 5w20/5w30 blend, but I'm using Castrol HM so it's not any thinner than an average 5w30.

The Rotella suggestions is a good one if you go with the 10w30, but I'd not pick it for winter. The T6 might be okay for winter, probably not "optimal".

Somebody said SOPUS oils run quiet in the 4.0. That's been my experience as well. I also get the same thing with Castrol. Much to my disappointment Maxlife did not agree with mine in the noise department, but the UOA's with Maxlife in the 4.0 have looked spectacular.

So this is what I got from all of you:

Rotella T6
M1 0-40
M1 5-30
NO LUCAS!

You folk rule.
Sorry Kuato, haven't done a UOA yet. I got you guys to laugh at me when Ive done something dumb, and give me the best advice on the web. I get UTA here - Used Time Analysis!

Thanks again everyone. No AFE for me.

I used the AFE in my hemi for my last sump fill. No complaints however I did go fankenbrew with eneos and m1 0w-40 and the engine is noticeably quieter on the bottom end. The top end made no extra noise with the AFE in and no noticeable consumption.
That being said if your jeep had the 4.0 thicker is better. Everyone I know with the 4.0 or 4.2 runs a 40 grade. Most are mud happy and beat on their jeeps.
Yeah forget the Lucas. Your engine will thank you.

You could even run less out of pocket in the summer and go with Rotella 15-40 (very good oil) in the summer, or go with the 10-30 (think its called T5) all year round. If I had the 4.0 still, that is what I would run. But a try at the M1 0-40 may be a shot I would try at one point. That engine doesn't mind thick oils.

Just to clarify- I think Mobil's AFE oils are excellent products for the right application. They seem to have great base stocks, the one UOA I ran was very good, and I've never had strange noises or anything like that.

But they're just not the best for a Jeep 4.0. Save them for a more modern roller-cammed engine- I use 0w20AFE in my 4.7 for example. The 4.0 is just too well documented as "preferring" a thicker oil even than its specified for.
