There are plenty of people out there who call anything "snake oil" when they've never tried it, with the main excuse being they didn't like the company's claims.
I can extrapolate from that observation, the leading snake oil sold in the US is probably WD-40.

It happens. The problem at least the way I see it is there are a lot of products that are surrounded with a lot of hype, or agressive marketing that failed to deliver. Based on that a lot of other products that people haven't tried catch a bad rap. There are also a lot of people who like to post negative comments just to see if they can stir the pot a bit. Last but not least, are the shills pushing product, they are easy enough to spot though.
