My power steering on my Oldsmobile has a weep behind the pulley coming from a shaft seal I think. It's leaked round about an ounce a month give or take. Also, when I get about 3/4 of the way to each stop the pump was whining.

I siphoned the pump reservoir empty, and I got out approximately 10 ounces. Put 10 ounces of the Lucas in, and I have driven it about 80 miles, and I don't see any more weeping coming from behind the pulley. That stuff is thicker than molasses. When I would get close to a stop, the pump would whine, but now the pump is significantly quieter when I get near the stops. Like a night and day difference.

Anybody else had any luck with Lucas stopping leaks or quieting pump whine? What's the magic in the bottle...high viscosity? Anyway, Advance Auto Parts has the 12 ounce bottles on sale now if anybody needs any.

That was another product we used on occasion when management took a trade that had a PS pump noise. I can't speak for long term results, but it helped quiet them down long enough to wholesale the car.

I bought an '88 Ramcharger that had an empty reservoir, which, IIRC, the previous owner said was due to a leak. I was young looking for something cheap for my gramma down in the mid-Atlantic to putz around in for a bit and then sell for more than I paid for it (which she did.)

Anyway, I planned on adding only a little of the Lucas PS Stop Leak, but ended up filling the reservoir to full with it. Not only did all steering noise subside (duh,) but the thing was still full when she sold it a year later. I don't know how bad the leak was to begin with, so I don't whether it being full when sold was fully or partially to Lucas' credit (or not at all.)

Either way, I used it and had no other issues for the month I drove it to work that winter, and no reports of problems from gramma afterward (and no noted issues when I visited and inspected,) so that's something...

This stuff caused unbearable p/s pump noise in my previous vehicle. I would much rather have the leak.

Day two and the pump noise is completely gone when nearing the stops. Pump noise was not bad to begin with, but I consider pump noise gone as a bonus because I just wanted the seal leak to stop, and so far it is still dry.

@BigBuck

That's not good to hear. I am having the opposite effect. I reckon one size does not fit all.

+1 CRC's line makes some good stuff. Lucas PS treatment is one of the few lucas products I would use but I would try a drain and fill and try the CRC

Prestone PS stop leak worked for me

I used the Lucas PSF stop leak in mom's 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it didn't help. She sold the car a few months later, so maybe the fluid didn't have enough time to stop the leak.

I used some of this as a temp fix for my leaking PS rack. I filled an entire bottle after siphoning out the old fluid. The leak remained, but a lot less than regular PS fluid/ATF. It did help cure the noise and grinding.

In the end, I still wound up replacing the rack & pinion.

Has worked for a couple vehicles for me. Afterwards if there was room / need for more fluid, I topped off with Maxlife. Fixed some slow leaks/weeps that I couldn't locate and seemed like a permanent fix without any issues.

I've used it to successfully quiet a noisy pump that had been run dry.
Lucas: products to use on a car right before you trade it in or unload it on Craigslist
