I have a MI -206 on my car and I just did the fresh oil change and all 3 weeks ago. With all the reading I've been doing, I want to switch to the K&N long filter cause I hear its the best flowing filter out. I do hear the M1-206 filters better though. My TA isnt my daily driver and I put about 400 miles a month on it and wanted to go 6 mos before oil changes.

My question is... If I go buy the K&N oil filter, can I just take out the M1-206 and put the K&N on or do I need to do a whole oil change? I guess I just "wasted" 13 bucks on the M1-206 but would feel more "comfortable" having a free-er flowing oil filter cause I do drive hard occasionally. About how much oil should I expect to lose by pulling out the old Mobil and putting in the new K&N? Thanks!

You'll have to figure out how much oil your filter holds but a complete change out isn't necessary to switch filters at this point. I don't see the need though. If you want to use a K&N the next oil change fine, but there is no reason to waist a perfectly good Mobil filter. Depending on the type of oil you're using, if you intend a long drain interval just go half the interval if you like and then switch filters without changing the oil. Perfectly acceptable.

I agree with 7TFord. Stick with the Mobil 1 and switch at the next change. Your thoughts are that the K&N might flow better, but in the meantime, the issue is "Does the Mobil 1 flow insufficiently?" I'd say no, certainly not so that you should yank the filter. Keep in mind that they're both made by Champion and share many components. In the Mercruiser filter study (this same message board), the K&N had 171 sq in of media, while the cousin STP had 163 sq in, not a huge difference, although the K&N did have more inner tube holes. At this point I suspect that K&Ns do flow more than their Champion cousins, but not dramatically so.

well I'll stick with the M1 206 for now. i'll change it out in a couple mos. I've been using Mobil 1 10w30 Synthetic since day one. Thanks guys!
