Interesting that Michigan has the 7th highest gas taxes yet our prices are low compared to many.

Fascinating how you selectively edited that out of my prior post when you used the "Quote" feature to make your most recent post grampi. Care to explain why?

Nothing was edited out of that post. What are you talking about?

My apologies on that point. Everything else still stands. You received a factual answer to begin with to your question. No company is currently investing big $$$ in refining along the US West Coast to meet US West Coast specs, industry news the last several years has revolved around the marginal profitability of several refineries in the SF Bay Area and how much longer they may continue to operate. It's a niche market with limited demand with additional operation constraints. It was uncertain for a while if the Torrance refinery would be allowed to restart after the last major incident under XOM ownership for example.

I always wonder why so many stations in the US have that policy, because up here at pretty much 99% of the stations the price is the same if you pay by debit/credit or with cash.

I remember that being popular in the early 1980's at retail but instead of discount for paying with cash it was an up charge for paying by credit which was later ruled against. Back then we had rampant inflation with CD's paying double digit interest as an explanation. Now I suppose it's merchant credit card fees driving this trend, but that's just a guess. Thankfully it's not widespread where I currently live but it's common in the Houston area.

You must be on the other side of the Canal.

I notice it with certain stations. Arco is one. I'll never get gasoline there.

Today I used my Meijer $1 off a gallon reward so I got 30 gallons of unleaded for 1.05 a gallons. That feels like a lotto win right there.

it doesn't...

Then why every fuel thread you comment about the mythical big bad gas retailer and his gauging tactics?

grampi hasn't changed no matter how much factual material has been posted in the past 3 years. A national oil company with subsidized pricing such as the Venezuelan model with PDVSA is his objective. See this thread for reference.

Historical Answer for grampi Thread

I've seen no such movements making it into the media wherever marijuana has been legalized in the past 3 years so this has nothing to do with weed, it's his personal crusade for a socialist system that has failed all tests of longevity in the real world. He's just not quite as up front about it these days but it's clearly still there.

I'm guessing, like Nyogtha said, it's credit card fees causing the difference. Stinks when you see a good price, pull up to the pump, and notice it's a cash-only price.

Yep, just moved from Bremerton to Shelton a couple of months ago. I noticed the price has been higher over there for a long time.

My mech charges a fee for credit cards but not debit cards, not sure what the difference is but his wife says the credit card fees were killing them so they had to start recouping it. I'm guessing all the cash back cards are offering plays some role here.

I like it down that way. I will sometimes take a drive down there and I am guaranteed to lug the trailer through there at least 3 times a year on the way to the coast.

I personally know at least 10 folks who commute from the area to Bangor for work everyday, know some folks who do it to PSNS as well.
Wish they would make Highway 3 4 lanes from Gorst at least out to Belfair and maybe put the bypass around Belfair they have been talking about for years.

Good luck with that. They have been talking about connecting Hwy 167 to I-5 for decades. The I-5 project in Tacoma started in 2000. Looks to be several more years before that is done. The WSDOT takes its sweet time on pretty much everything, especially outside of Seattle.

About time it dropped here. I paid $2.65 today at Kwik Fill station. On other side of river near me or 4 miles away the BP station its $2.80. Go figure

Credit card companies and POS services charge fees. Businesses charge higher prices to offset the fees.

CC companies and POS services (like Square or any other business) charge fees obviously because they need to stay in business. Businesses pay the fees to these companies because some customers simply will not shop if they can't use their credit cards. Also people who don't have physical money to spend will charge it on their card, to the business that's the difference between selling something and not selling something at all. If I had a business and it was cash only, I'm probably losing a significant amount of customers.

Debit cards have no fees because you're not charging/borrowing anything. It goes straight to your bank account and the bank is either charging you the fee for keeping the account open, or making interest off of your account anyway.

The low prices seem to over in Missouri. Yesterday, 12/06 I bought gas for $1.74, a QT a few miles away was $2.19, within a couple of hrs the gas that was $1.74 was up to $2.19, a pretty big jump !!

Well OPEC has decided to cut production.

Filled up my wife's Mustang for $1.799 / gal E10 RUL on Wed., Gasbuddy shows that's still the price today. QT was $1.899 / gal Wed, Gasbuddy shows it's back to $1.839 again today, which is what it was when I filled my truck up last Sat.

Crude prices are definitely rising though.
