Hi,
I have a 1940 Chev truck that I'm looking for a recommendation on what type, brand and weight of oil to use with it. It now has a 427ci big block chev in it, that has maybe 4 or 5 thousand miles on it (I had the pan and valve covers off, and it looks brand new) Noticed that it has forged crank, forged pistons and forged rods... Runs great, no issues and the oil stays very clean... Right now it's got Castrol GTX 20W50, with a bottle of GM's EOS in it. For a filter, I use the ones for the gravel truck (PH 373) as there's more surface area to them, and because I have the room, but I'm always open to recomendations there too... It's a driver, seeing everything from short city trips, to cross country road trips, to the occasional trip down the track. When first fired up, at idle, oil pressure is at 45psi. When at operating temp it's at about 30psi. Home base is on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada, Thanks!

After you run your break in a HDEO like Stephen_G would be a fine recommendation a 10W30 should work just fine but if you feel like that is too light for your taste 15W40 should be overkill for oil thickness.

He says it has a filter on it, a large one, and a 427 BB would have a large air cleaner on it.

I'd run Rotella 5W-40 in it.

Pics???

I'm not too up on attaching pictures... we'll see if this works. Filters don't get too much bigger that what I have with the PH373 for oil, and for air it's a big one too 14"x6" K&N (open) though there are plans to duct it to cooler air...

First of all

And like everyone above, I agree that you can't go wrong with Rotella T-6 (5W-40) or T-5 (10W-30). By the way, love your neck of the woods! Beautiful B.C.!!

Thanks for the welcome, BC is awesome. When it's not raining...

With the Rotella, do you know if the Zinc content varys by type, or grade? and if it has sufficient zinc content for an engine like mine, or if I should also be adding a supplement (such as EOS) to it... and if so how much?

We get a different SuperTech on this side of the border than you guys do. Ours is SafetyKleen, and I'd have no qualms against using it, either, though.

I'd try a 15-40 HDEO in it, for sure. The 20-50 is for very extreme conditions of heat.
And maybe use only 1/2 of the EOS that you are currently using.
It's great to use a larger filter, for a bunch of reasons.

Did some looking around, Locally there's not as much selection as I thought there would be, But I found some Rotella T6 5W-40. Also didn't realise K&N made a 2qt filter (HP-6002), and have picked one of those up too. With the T-6, what kind of service interval am I looking at for changing oil / filter in the future? Thanks!

Without analysis I believe a 5-6K recommendation would be the max I would do even with T6. I am certain there will be fuel dilution I just can not tell you how much.

Great looking truck , I too belong to the ATHS own a 67 Diamond-T
welcome to the forum, an Delvac or Delo oils would be fine in your truck, do a uoa from Blackstone or other lab ,they'll let you know if its ok to extend your OCI.

Thanks, I decided out of curiosity to see what was in the filter, and about the only thing of interest was some shiney flakes (looks like chrome) very thin, maybe ranging from .010" to .150" across. Fairly new engine, and I can't think of any engine dress up stuff that it would be coming off (timing chain, valve covers and oil pan are plain steel) Typ. break in type stuff or...?
