I like the lightweight J frame types as a 5 shot with you is better than a 17 shot left at home . Looking at the stats how many shots other than the cops that spray and pray are shot per comfrontation?

Steve S,

I'm pretty much with you on your opinion. I also suggest highly the J framed Smith and Wessons or the Taurus 38's but in addition I also suggest the Bersa 380ACP pistols.

Currently loooking into getting the new Ruger 38 special revolver may just be the best of the best. Think about it.

I have the Taurus 85 hammerless DA 38, which is a good accurate snub nose. Heavy. I also have a Kel Tec PF9, which I carry frequently. Light, in front pocket holster, nearly unnoticable. And mine functions well and shoots decently at 15 yards or less. At 25 yards, it is fair. I also bought the new Taurus 709 slim, thinking that the safety would be a great thing. It is a decent accurate small gun but just a few ounces more than the KT. That little bit of weight makes a difference to me. In a belt holster, maybe not. A Hogue handall sleeve makes these small guns more managable, if you are shooting a quantity of 9mm. I wouldn't shoot any of them much with +P.

I drop a ruger LCP in my pocket (with desantis nemesis holster) of just about anything i'm wearing and its almost unnoticeable. My next stop is an LCR. I just like the trigger on it better than the J frame. I also just got a Minotaur MTAC for my XD-9 and might get a subcompact of that neener (xd9sc) soon. Lots of good choices.

For those who don't know, it's in relation with this thread: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/posts/1843957/

Here is a lot of good info and some not so good.

Like I said in the above, the best gun is the one that you can handle proficiently, afford to purchase, afford to feed (as in lots of practice)and most importantly, carry with you all the time.

I'm not really interested in carrying a gun, but I bought a Sig Sauer P238 a few months ago that seems like it would make a good carry gun.

I also have a SCCY CXP-1 (a Kel-Tec knock off, sort of) that is small and light and could be carried easily. It recoils like a mule, however. I used it for my CCW class.

I don't care much for revolvers, but a friend has a Ruger LCR and it seems like a nice gun, that could be carried if you are into that type of thing.

The LCR may be my next purchase, or one of the compact Rock Island Armory 1911's.

I'm kinda late getting in on this thread, but I'm a LEO with 28 years experience. I started out carrying S&W .357 mag. revolvers early in my career, moved to a model 92FC 9mm Beretta, then an HK USP .45, a Sig P229 .40 cal. and was issued my first Glock last week--Model 23 .40 cal. I'd never fired a Glock prior to last week, but I gotta tell you I'm impressed with the Glock for it's simplicity, quality construction, low maintenance, accuracy, and overall ease of use.

The Glock is as easy to use as a revolver, but has a LOT of firepower. There are no manual safeties to mess with in a stressful situation--just pull, aim and fire. The low maintenance design makes it ideal for someone who doesn't shoot a lot, but needs reliable personal protection. The Glock is available in several concealable models in varying calibers and is less-expensive than many other semiautos of the same class.

Although technically it's designed and machined in Austria, the gun itself is assembled in Smyrna, GA.

That being said, I'd recommend that anyone contemplating a gun purchase, get appropriate training from a professional and try out different designs to see what fits their particular situation the best.

Good luck, and let's hope you never have to use it. . .

It depends.

I am thinking the same way.

Depends on the clothes and weather.

Ruger LCP for hot days and in the pocket. Have it with me most of the time...

Ruger SR9C or S&W M&P compact with IWB Crossbreed holster.

S&W 638 in a strong side belt holster or pocket carry.

May be getting a Ruger LCR in 38sp since the Wife has taken the 638 over for her carry.

I got a Ruger LCR last week and I love it. Light as a feather. I don't even use a holster; just tuck it in my waistband and go. Compared to my Glock 26 in a Fobus holster it's like not carrying at all.

My favorite way to carry is under the arm, but that comes few and far between here in Florida. I typically carry my Sig in the small of my back with an inside the belt holster. Probably not the most convenient place. I carry a Beretta Tomcat in my front pocket.

You have to find what is comfortable for you and what works with that particular weapon. Practice drawing with it unloaded until you get a good feel for it. Then practice alot more!

Bought a Glock 26 today with the extension magazine, LOVE IT! IWB soft holster (Uncle Mike's #12) fits fine at about 4-5 o'clock, and nothing sticks out. 12 rounds of PDX1.

Do you have both the xd 9 and 40? I wonder how the recoil is on the sc 40?
