Lookin to buy a new front loading washer and dryer

Just bought an LG set at Best Buy in November, $349 for the washer and $384 for the gas dryer. Electric was $349.

They are great! Quiet and couldn't ask for anything more, I'd highly recommend.

I know the older Maytag Neptune front loaders have a poor reputation, but anything Whirlpool designed should be excellent also.

I heard Lg parts are difficult to find and nobody wants to work on them. Is there any truth to this? But at that price it'd be hard too pass up.

Easy decision...Samsung VRT. Own it, Love it, Would buy again.

I bought LG front loader few months ago, I don't like it as much as my 12 years old. You can not over-ride the pre-program wash cycles as the manual front loader I had 12 years ago. If I have to do it again, I would buy Samsung instead of LG.

Also check with your local water and gas companies, they may have rebate(s) for water efficient front loader. It costs me $240 for the LG after $280 rebates.

I have had the WHirlpool for about 4 years now and wouldn't go back to a top load. I paid a premium for mine at the time but it has paid for itself.

Had Kenmore front loader for about 5 years until it stopped spinning on high speed. The repairman that Sears sent over was useless. Anyway an independent guy said the motor was shot. He said forget buying a new front loader and get a whirlpool top loader. Thats what I did; so far so good but its only been a few months.

Pick up the latest edition of Consumer Reports Guide - this should at least get you started and help you avoid some potential pitfalls.

We ended up getting a Samsung set about a year ago (FL washer and gas dryer), mainly based on looks, because function-wise, I think there isn't that much difference among them. And if they have some fancy features, chances are, you rarely ever use them anyway. Haven't had any problems with it so far, but we did get the extended service plan just in case.

We also have Samsung VRT's. We're very pleased with both the washer and the dryer.

We had one issue with the gas dryer-the ignitor failed shortly after we purchased and installed the dryer. Interesting-when the faulty ignitor was removed it had "Maytag" stamped onto it. The ignitor that the tech brought to replace it was a slightly different design and didn't have the Maytag stamp.

We bought a GE front loader washer and it leaked water all over the floor on the first load.......assembled incorrectly at factory. Then the circuit board went bad and was replaced with the same part which was also defective. Finally the circuit board was upgraded and replaced again, that time it worked correctly. All of this was in a four month period. Buy another GE? Not even for free.

DO spring the extra money for the pedestals that the machines sit on, they are worth every penny! Why do I know that? Because we didn't buy them and our backs are paying the price. NOT the place to save a buck.

I subscribe to CR on line and have noticed an interesting trend. When I was researching washers and dryers the editors rated them well, but the readers reviews don't rate them very well (some pretty well trashed them). Many of the brands/models that the editors didn't like (like the Samsung's we purchased) the readers rated very high.

We have a Whirlpool Duet set, they are really good and zero issues in the last 2 years of ownership. They are quiet and the settings on the front are straightforward and useful.

I prefer to buy machines (of any kind) from a place that can service them or that I know there is a local service company. I kind of live in the middle of nowhere so service becomes a big deal quickly.

Remember that you must use HE detergent in most front loaders; regular detergent will mess up the machine and void your warranty in one load!

We have a front load GE washer & drier. We got them as scratch & dent specials at Home Depot 5 or 6 years. We're very happy with them and have never had any problems.

I'm not sure if all front loads are like this but ours is incredibly heavy from the glass door (very thick glass) and it is very finicky about being properly leveled, which is a big challenge since it's located in a corner.

tom reminded me of another point. Some front loaders can have massive amounts of vibration. You will want to take location into consideration as well as "low vibration" models. The floor construction can make a difference as well.
