I drive a 93 civic with a b16a3 (1.6 dohc vtec 8000rpm I/H/E) it's new to me and I drive it hard. I changed the oil with PP 5-30 and a bosch premium filter shortly after I got. I am about 4000 into oci. I went to the drag strip and was fine on oil last week before the 12 runs I put it through. I checked the oil Sunday morning prior to an autocross and was about a quart low. There was virtually no consumption till i drag raced it and drove it for a week then it was a quart low. I ran to the gas station and put a quart of speedway brand 5w30 in cause it was my only option. I know these motors are notorious for consumption but i figured it would be gradual. It really didn't consume any during the autocross either. Do you guys think I should run shorter oci's? I probably won't drag race it till later in the year when I start focusing on making more power, but it will see 2 to 3 autocross' a month and like I said I drive it hard. I am going to change the oil soon because of the [censored] i put in and im nearing 4k miles. I just got an awesome clearance deal on 2 5 gt jugs of synpower for 5$ so that is what is going in next. Any suggestion on different oil to us or maybe thinking about going to pcv breather/ catch can setup? All opinions appreciated.

It's very possible that the drag race didn't cause your car to permanently consume oil, but that the oil was consumed during the race when the engine was loaded.

I'm not sure I'd do much more than keep an eye on it. Oil is cheap. Maybe a short ~5000 mile OCI if you're doing so much track type stuff.

First welcome to BITOG!

Hard to say about the oil consumption but it is my experience, the higher the rev's, the higher the oil consumption vs just tooling around.

With the amount of autocrossing you do I trust you have an oil pressure gauge to monitor for oil starvation?

Hey, a BITOG'er from South Bend! I used to live in Mishawaka, practically next door. I'd bet you were doing an Auto-X at The Tire Rack, right?

Synpower 5w30 would be a good choice. The SN-qualified version is liked by many on this board due to the low NOACK volatility number. Maybe that would help out on oil consumption. Another good Valvoline choice would be MaxLife synthetic. Since your car is a '93 it could probably use the benefits of a High-Mileage oil.

The high oil consumption you were seeing I think is the result of the high-rpm, high-G maneuvering you were doing in the autocross. Oil carryover through the PCV system into the intake could cause that. If it is oil carryover, no oil that you could use could fix that. You just have to check the oil before every event.

I've read Honda's tend to consume more oil the harder they are run - it's almost a direct correlation.

If you're reving it past 6k rpm on a regular basis racing it, it will consume oil. It's really nothing to worry about - just keep the oil topped off!

That seems to be the case.

My Integra GS-R (B18C1) would not consume any appreciable oil if I stayed off the higher lift/longer duration cam lobes. Kept on the long intake runners and economy lobes it was fine. Open it up and let it rev and it would consume. Don't know if that was VTEC or just rpm related.

That is the case with all engines the harder you work them the more oil they use. Some engines use more some a little more.

No, but the car has 2, one for the dummy light and another for vtec engaugement. I keep an eye on the oil I am sure she is alright.

Yes it was at the tire rack.

If you want to keep that oil out of your intake manifold (and therefore your combustion chambers), think about getting an air/oil separator with a drain on the bottom.

Put it inline between the end of the PCV valve and the intake manifold PCV line inlet.
