Go ahead, tell us about it.

Got the family plan with Verizon. 3 phones with 700 anytime minutes, free verizon to verizon, nights and weekends. Pay the extra $5 for texting (12 yr old daughter). My phone is a Razor thats supplied by my company. The battery now holds enough charge time for about 5 minutes of talking. Thats just fine with me, no plans of replacing it.

Was it as bad for you as it was for me

That was the most reluctant $5 I think that I've ever spent ..and I've surely done the equivalent of just throwing them in the street in some of the stuff I've done. I hate resignation to avoided costs for the sake of what I consider senseless indulgence.

(no, I'm not really THAT upset about it - but figured I'd whine since we're here).

One company has developed a p2p cell phone that can work without towers and without fees, as long as enough units are in range to route a call to the destination. I can see battery life problems with that system because of all the energy spent routing other people's calls, but for text messages it would be ideal.

Motorola RAZR V3xx Platinum. Got two of them for free.

AT&T FamilyTalk 550 plan for $50/month after discount. 550 minutes and Unlimited Nights/Weekends/Mobile-to-Mobile.

Battery pack is 3 NiMH batteries same OD as a AAA (albeit longer), same voltage as 3 AAA NiMH in series, and in a little plastic pack with terminals.

Think I can dodge a couple of $1.50 rechargeables in there with a bit of work, wire and araldite

I have a Basic samsung business level phone with no fancy features I got off ebay 6 months ago for $90 NIB. I am happy with it. I only text message maybe once every two weeks. I usually forget the [censored] thing when I leave the house anyway.

Take the temperature monitoring circuit (diode and stuff) from the old battery pack and solder it into the home made one. You can even use AA's for extended talk time. Doesn't matter if they stick out a bit...

Perform surgery. Peel that label off and just gang the 3 AAA like they did

Tape should serve you well here..

You may also get a honorable mention in the Cheapskate thread.

we also use our cell phone as a phone:
Nokia brick; probably one of the last bricks; works great, and rugged, not too fancy, but small enough. GREAT battery life! Only phone that gets us a good signal in the BFE we live in called Buies Creek, NC ! (service: alltel):

I liked my old one with the b&w screen that you could read without having to press a button to tell it to light up the screen, and you could read it in bright sunlight without having to go under a shroud.

Then there are the tiny buttons and tiny print on the new screen...

where are my glasses? I want to use my phone.

I have an old Nokia 6010 on Tmobile prepaid wireless. I last filled it up in July with $100 and I currently have $23.91 on it. So that's about $12.68/month it's costing me.

I would personally benefit from something like that, Brian. But that I would incur higher costs with the rest of the family. They actually see a purpose to these things beyond their sensible use. Sales person, service person, frequent flyer ..sure(flier? I can't quite equate it to the difference between "dryer and drier" can one be frequently more "fly" when flying "..for a white guy ..give it to me baby! Ah-ha ah-ha ..give it to me baby! Ah-ha ah-ha! - Offspring)

I'm so cheap, when I get a voicemail, I dial my cellphone from a landline and get it that way (hit # during the greeting) instead of getting the voicemail through the cellphone. Saves minutes that way
