So money is a little tight while coming up on my next oil change, and since they seem to be direct competitors as far as price, I'm looking at Havoline, QSGB, and MS5K. All between $13-$14.50 per 5qt jug. Mostly short trips (10 miles round trip per day). This will be going in my 4.0 mustang in the 5W30 flavor. I've seen great UOA's from all of them...anyone have a reason for one being better than the other? On a side note, I my end up trying out what DNewton has been preaching about and get a UOA and start to stretch it out since this motor seems to like conventional so much anyway. All comments welcome, thanks in advance guys.

What OCI do you plan on running?

As far as the oils go, pick the one that looks the best, or gives you the warm fuzzy feelings. They all are quality products and will serve you just fine.

I think I'm going to start with 5-6k and then do a uoa. It's an automatic, no hard driving, and no known problems...I've heard that MS5K is one of the best deals out there

If cash is tight use that 5$ wal Mart coupon, you can get a jug of VWB for 11$. But if you insist on using one of the three you mentioned just pick one they are all good and so is VWB.

oh I def dont have anything against valvoline, I just didn't know I could get that kind of a deal on it

Check your local O'Reilly's. They have PP on clearance for $2.57 a qt., 5W20 only.

Skip the uoa if money is tight. 6k oci with conventional no problem. Use the money you would've spent on uoa and do another oil change.

Of those you mentioned I'd go MS5K or QSGB, but SuperTech is even less and has turned in plenty of decent UOA's.

Peak can often be had on the cheap as well and is good oil.

Buying name brand synthetic oil when it's on sale (or clearance) can be less than conventional. O'Reilly currently has Pennzoil Platinum 5W20 on clearance for $2.57/qt ($12.85 for 5-qt), hard to find a good conventional at lower price than that. Sometimes the cost of synthetic oil can be less than $1/qt if you can get the rebate from oil company. Pennzoil currently has $10 rebate for Platinum, so that the actual cost can be as little as $2.85 for 5 quarts(but you have to pay sale tax on clearance price of $12.85).

With synthetic oil you can extend OCI to at least 50% longer than any conventional oil under the same driving condition. Some cars are difficult(and timing consuming) to change oil and filter, I prefer to extend the OCI as much as I can on those cars.

Dave, how much would I have to order for them to sell to me? We have a Shell distributor close by that my shop gets their oil from

VWB at $11 is the money shot IMO. I'm just finishing up my rather large stash that dated back to 08'.
