I dont have any friends in AZ or somewhere else to help. What are owners in my area currently trying for similar cleanups on engines with unknown history?

Pennzoil Ultra. Best cleaning oil out there. Used it about 5 changes in my sig car and really improved mpg and throttle response.
I recommend if you are not going to try Auto-Rx, try a high ester motor oil preferably Red Line in the 20 viscosity variety or you can try g-oil. If using Red Line I recommend a 7-9K OCI if using G-OIL I would give it two OCI'S.
How bad does it look from the filler hole? If its real sludgy, Pennzoil ultra will do a good safe cleaning. HDEO is another option that seems to be popular, mainly rotella T5 10w30 and T6 5w40. High detergency and dispersants should clean most motors rings and lifters in 5 k miles. Use a good filter like Bosch or pure one.
