Korean Conflict

You have to remember boys & boys. That both Koreas are in a state of war and that they are only on a truce for now....or like forever.

So why the heck is the South doing military exercises with the USA. It just looks like the South wants a fight IN THEIR EYES (North).

Not to mention in our eyes (South & USA) they are unbalanced and unpredictable!

Stupid world we live in!!!!!!!!

The USS George Washington is headed there, China isn't happy about it. The next few weeks/months should be very interesting.

China is just looking for a reason to start a fight with the US.

NK is the perfect reason - 'prtecting our dear and valued neighbour'...that is why the US and SK are doing next to nothing.

If this escalated into a full fight, you'd see the start of WWIII - remember, China IS a nuclear power.

China would be destroyed 10,000 over and us a couple hundred times. One of our Ohio Class boomer subs would turn China into a cinder.

There is no earthly reason why China would want war.

Why do you think otherwise???

The ROK (South Korea) doesn't need the 28,000 U.S. troops there to do its fighting for them. They have one of the largest, most sophisticated militaries in Asia, and I think we're kind of busy right now...
I do not think our military is geared to win a war or police action based upon the results dating from the Korean conflict, Vietnam, to what ever the reason we are in middle east for now. Just my opinion. N. Korea needs more money.

Agreed.

The Chinese Type 98 is no match for the M1 Abrams. If there is anything left of Chinese armor after the Army Apaches, Marine Cobras, and Air Force A-10s rip through them, the Abrams will tear through them like Medina Ridge. The J10 would make a lot of new F-15/ F-16/ F-18 Aces. Not to mention the Raptors.

Even if PRoC doesn't know that, They do know where thier bread is buttered. I wonder how long they could stand economically without US and Allies buying thier stuff?

China has numbers, but we have the technology. It would purely be a naval war between us, and we have a vastly superior navy. Most of their navy is relegated to ancient diesel electric Romeo class, I think 5 aging nuclear subs that give anyone who works on them cancer due to high radiation levels. The best subs they have are the Russian designed/built Kilo Class diesel electric that are extremely quiet on battery power. But still, none of them are a match for even our oldest Los Angeless (688) class Attack subs. And the virginia/seawolf/ohio are even quieter. They would be decimated.

But I actually think if forced to pick sides, china would side with us, or remain neutral, because they would lose us as their primary trade partner.

DO NOT underestimate the Chinese navy. Their technology isn't that far behind ours- that coupled with their numbers and the fact that their war ships are more heavily armed makes them a formidable adversary. BTW, they also have a bit of military technology that could be a bit problematic to us in the event of a conflict.

This info comes from someone who was in the NAVY.

Also remember that there are more English speaking Chinese than there are Americans... Yeah, lets start a fight with the most populated country in the world which also happens to be a financial and military superpower whom we are in MAJOR debt to. Great idea.

I think we need to revisit the history of the Korean War. North Korea pushed the South almost completely off the peninsula, rather quickly.

If I recall, the US landed at/near Inchon as wall as the Pusan breakout. (It's been a while since I studied that as a cadet.)
The North had over-extended it's supply lines and the US/UN forces were able to push them back almost to the Chinese border.

After some bridges across the Yalu River were bombed, the UN forces were facing not only North Korea, but the Chinese.

The war was largely fought to a stalemate near the 38th parallel. UN modern armies with modern weapons facing Chinese human waves. The Chinese could put far more troops on the ground given both their population and closer proximity to the battlefront. Soldiers in the back of the waves would pick up weapons from their fallen comrades in the front mowed down by UN machine guns and artillery.

Facing a North Korea with Chinese backing would not be the sort of cakewalk we saw in Iraq. I think their soldiers fear their leaders and government more than South Korea and their Western Allies.

I could be wrong, as I thought both Gulf wars would be more difficult, more like Afghanistan, but on a larger scale.

North Korea really has little to lose in such a conflict. Especially when you have leadership that cares little for it's people.

We should have left the Chinese to their slumber. Instead of letting into the WTO and enabling them to become so powerful.Pat Buchanan had an interesting article Friday on this very subject.

Why ever would China want War with the U.S./South Korea/Japan (potentially)? We're some of their best customers and what other suckers would allow them to artificially devaluate their currency?

I doubt China is much more than a nominal ally to the North at this point and they're probably also tired of having to deal with 10,000s of hungry North Korean refugees on their border. They probably would hate any U.S. bases north of the 38th parallel, but also probably wouldn't mind a collapse of the Northern regime and unification under the ROK gov't provided they received certain security guarantees...

Korean war is a war that Soviet and China started to create a buffer zone in the east. Having Japan fallen to the US and a permanent US base in Japan and Korea makes the capital of China directly at the striking zone.

The calculation of the that war is definitely bad, after the north strike down south and south strike back up north could possibly get the war zone even closer to the Chinese / Korean border. Mao decided that it is not acceptable and decided to send soldiers of his former civil war rival down on a suicide mission. His own son died there as well. In the end, nobody wins and people gets tired of fighting, so we end up having a truce that lasted 2 generations.

Gone are the war mongers from the last generations from all sides. Now we have a newer generations of politicians with this old baggage, and a NK that's so poor with a leader so incapable that bullying is the only way to get food on the table.

Will China still honor their defense treaty with the NK? Who knows. One thing they would not want to do is to leave 30 years of economic development and jump back to the war their grand fathers started. If anything I bet the US wouldn't want the same thing, and neither does SK. I think NK knows that China, SK, and US all wanted to cut NK off and NK wants to rock the boat to get some hand outs. If things get out of hand China and US would have a sort of agreement that:

1) US would leave NK in place as a buffer zone
2) US would strike some NK targets and China would tolerate this with criticism and no retaliation
3) China would help some defense scouting that's little to no use, to fulfill the obligation of the NK China defense treaty.
4) NK military would be damaged that they can't do much for a while.

However, we can't be sure that everyone will think rationally.

China is too smart to start dumb costly wars such as the two fronts the US has right now.

I'd assume so, but maybe China could talk some sense into him. I almost think China keeps NK around and desperate just to annoy the West and use up intelligence resources...

It would be a tactically interesting war though, S. Korea must have all the NK's military installations mapped to the 1/4". Maybe China has done the same for NK? It would almost be MAD on the front lines if each side can monitor each others artillery firing, probably each side could respond before the enemies shells landed.

Exactly. While he was educated in Switzerland,he is bound to have a flawed view of the world and the way things work.On the other hand,he was educated in Switzerland and is probably a very intelligent person. He speaks fluent english,German and French.Take a flawed world view and a very intelligent person and you may have a mad man running N.Korea that is worse than his dad was and is.

Kim Jong Un most likely knows that the US military is already stretched to its limit,he knows that we are involved in war now and he may think, and maybe rightly so,that the US is not going to get involved in a skirmish between N.& S.Korea.

We may send some token show of force but I dont see any real military display going to S.Korea other than what is there and what is used for military exercises.

The top MiG aces in Korea were reportedly Soviet pilots.

Some movement ahead of the 7th Fleet exercises...

China steps in to defuse Korean war threat

By Stephen McDonell, wires

Updated 1 hour 15 minutes ago

China has been working to keep tensions between North and South Korea from escalating following a Northern artillery attack on the South on Tuesday.

China's foreign minister Yang Jiechi has met North Korea's ambassador and spoken on the phone to his US and South Korean counterparts.

Officials say China's priority is to avoid a recurrence of Tuesday's attack on Yeonpyeong Island, which killed four people.

Tomorrow the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington, with its 75 planes and crew of 6,000, will take part in massive naval war games.

North Korea has warned this will push the region to the brink of war and is threatening to launch fresh attacks if it is sufficiently provoked.

But it is playing a dangerous game. This week it killed four South Koreans in an artillery attack and in March it torpedoed a South Korean naval ship killing 46 sailors.

In what could be a crucial development, state-owned newspapers in China have blamed North Korea for this week's attack; one even editorialised that North Korea could be a country without a future.

If the North continues to resort to military strikes out of the blue, it will eventually lead to a more brutal response from Seoul. Adding nuclear weapons into the mix, the deadly standoff is well short of being resolved.

China has also voiced its displeasure at the participation of a United States aircraft carrier battle group in tomorrow's war games.

But South Korea and its American allies are keen to put on a show of strength.

The North yesterday started firing fresh volleys of artillery two days ahead of the war games, sending South Korean residents who remain on Yeonpyeong Island running to air raid shelters.

The sound of fresh rounds of artillery emanating from North Korea led to fears of a fresh attack.

But the South Korean government has said that this seemed to be a training exercise and that no shells landed on its territory.

Tensions high

The US commander in South Korea, General Walter Sharp, has called on North Korea to stop its attacks.

"What I've seen here is basically North Korea attacked this island, which is a clear violation of the armistice agreement," he said.

"We and the United Nations command will investigate this completely and will call on North Korea to stop any future attacks."

The hope is that Pyongyang's warning is just aggressive rhetoric from the North, but the South is bolstering its troop numbers in border regions just in case.

The South Korean government of Lee Myungbak has been criticised, even by some in its own party, for not responding to this week's artillery attack with enough force.

This is despite the fact that it fired 80 shells back across the border at the time. There has been no information about what damage this caused in the North.

South Korea's former defence minister Kim Yae-yong defended the decision not to call an airstrike on the North's artillery positions that fired on Yeonpyong, saying he did not want to risk starting a full-scale war.

He has now resigned, accepting full responsibility for what has been described as an inadequate response.

South koreans are vowing retaliation, now days after. The time to retaliate should have been after the attack that killed military personell, and innocent civilians!
