No. Steve S nailed it.

If you are looking extreme gas mileage, the answer is NO.
To achieve what you want, it is better to put those tornado fuel saver (aka Cyclone) or anything like that to choke your air intake. That device with extremely light foot on accelerator will give the best mileage, especially if the car comes with auto gearbox, however do not expect good acceleration power.

It is impossible for a high flow air filter to increase mileage on a modern fuel injected car.

true, if there is no Engine Control Unit air-fuel remapping by piggyback or standalone controller.
So without those ECU remapping, the best way to reduce fuel consumption is to restrict the intake air to the level of the car is still driveable and let the ECU automatically reduce the fuel injected but not triggering Engine Check condition.

Over-oiling, under-oiling, worrying about high Si in your oil, etc., just one of the many PITA you go through running one of these. Just stick with the Toyota Denso filter or Wix, Fram, etc. and spend your money on building up your oil stash while it is relatively cheap.

Want to ingest more dirt into your engine at the expense of a few an mpg or 2, then run the K&N.

Here is a link to how poorly K&N did in a test right here on this site: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest3.htm

Google "K&N and dirt ingestion" and you will be linked to dozens and dozens of various auto boards where people quit using K&N due to poor dirt filtering characteristics.

Here is a link to a BITOGer who posted his experience with K&N:

Steve seems to have hit the nail squarely. If you're worried about flow restriction the answer is to change your regular filter more often, not replace it with chickenwire.

...unless you want to rice out your Corolla - if so, remember to get the KN sticker, it adds at least 20hp.

/factual information

Your already going to get extreme gas mileage already. I think any reuseable filter is great just for that purpose, reuseable. My honda lawnmower hated the K&N.

You won't get better fuel mileage, but you will get a filter that will last the life of your auto or at least several hundred thousand miles.

Rice out a Corolla!!! Who in the #$%^ would do that? I have an 800 HP Z06, so, no chance of that happening..
Thanks for all the info..
In conclusion
1 Buy good quality regular filter
2 Change it frequently
3 Question answered thanks!!

I have indirect lab experience with K&N's vs aftermarket and OEM paper filters. (I supplied the filters to be tested, a friend who is a filtration research engineer did the testing)
These tests used much more sensitive test equipment than the ISO test calls for, and used a finer test aerosol.
Ben made the comment that when he first started to feed the small particle sizes through the K&N, he had to double check he was measuring on the correct side of the filter, as the concentration was hardly changing...

The results are here. http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/50650-air-filter-tests-finally.html
