Just Noticed About EAO Oil Filters

I just got my EAO oil filters. When I looked at both filters EAO11 and EAO34 I noticed that they are round at the top where one puts the oil filter wrench. In other words there are no flat spots for an oil filter wrench to grab. How do I tighten or more importantly, how do I get a filter off?

How true. Yet I had a Kia filter on so tight, from a dealer first service, that without my handy little tool I would have had to chisel the filter off.

Yeah. I dont know what makes lube monkeys think everything needs to be super tight. The only time I put on a filter by hand and had difficulty getting it off was when the f150 was overheated....
 
I have a hard time getting the filter on to the recommended tightness that they print on the can. Wix, and some others, have marks on them that you're supposed to tighten to after gasket contact. I rarely can get that far without a wrench. Since "hand tight" has always worked for me, that's where I stop ...when it would take a wrench to get it tighter.
 
To tighten a filter without indents, use a belt, strap, or metal-band oil filter wrench. There are also plastic/rubber filter sockets that'll provide enough friction to tighten that filter. The metal ones, like a socket/nut, will need indentations. Tripods and pliers will squeeze thin cheaply made filters and damage them.

Just type in filter wrench at the sears or harborfreight websites to see.
 
Thanks guys! I was concerned with getting the filter on to the recommended tightnes. Usually the manufacturers say 3/4 turn. I don't think I've had much success doing that without a wrench. But, and this is a big but, a lot depends on the vehicle. On my Ford Ranger 4.0 I don't think it would be a problem to any type of filter wrench to remove the filter. On my wife's 03 Liberty 3.7L it is a different story. One thing I have used are the rubber grippers that you can use on jars to get lids off. Probably could use those to tighten the filter.
 
I have a '99 Ranger 4.0 OHV and my wife drives a '02 3.7 Liberty...you have great taste!

Just incase you didn't know, an Eao 15 will fit on BOTH cars.

I might have to try the plier style, they might just work on the Liberty.

Tempest, is the EAO15 a bigger filter? Same pressure release or whatever it is called?

Yup, bigger with the same by-pass setings. You can see the spec's Here. As long as your Ranger has 3/4" threads (like mine), your good. I use them on both of my cars, though I'm going to the large Eao26 on the Ranger.
 
I use purple nitrile gloves when changing the oil and find it gives me just enough extra grip get the filter on tight enough. Also give enough thermal protection to take the old one off.
 
I like the glove idea.

Another trick I've used is to wrap a few rubber bands around the filter. This will give you a better grip.
 
I have started using the nitrile gloves. Problem is with my wife's Jeep. It is difficult to get a good grip on it. The rubber band idea is good too!

I hear you on that. I have started to use the rubber "grip gloves" that are out for gardening/moving. I normally use them for woodworking, but they work great for putting on a filter. I got my last set at Walmart (garden area) for ~$4.
 
In a pinch, I used sandpaper to get an old filter off when changing oil for my dad in Ohio once. I had forgotten to bring the right size filter band wrench with me. The sandpaper gave me just enough extra grip that I needed.
