Most gear oil will smell bad, due to the high sulfur content.

I always get a kick out of seeing new automotive students smelling gear oil for the first time.

At 70K, on a whim, I asked my local mechanic to pull the drain plug so I could re-fill it with LE 607. The oil was terribly black with sludge on the drain plug. There wasn't any metal on the plug though.
I have to "wonder" whether the oil really got changed in that service. After only 10k, it just doesn't seem possible a gear oil should look that bad.

When I changed the rear diff oil in my car (still had original oil in it at 50k miles) it drained out looking brand new.

All I have to say is that I drained the front differential oil out of a 2004 Sierra 1500 4X4 today and it came out in chunks and reeked to high heaven!! Only 54,000 miles with a magnetic drain plug that had a tennis ball type arrangement of wear metal on it! I put the plug back in and filled it up with 4 oz of acetone spray, and when I pulled the plug out 2 hours later there was sludge, ferrous and more chunks! 1.75 quarts of Amsoil SVG 75W90 went in next so we'll see how life is in 50,000 miles from today!!!

I had (have) similar thoughts. It wouldn't be the first time dealers have dissappointed me. But I'm also aware that some gear oils just aren't up to the task and will sludge at higher temps (180-200F). Maybe the So. Texas heat made for the perfect storm. I'm also aware that gear oil temps can rise to 100F above ambient temps very quickly. Picking a quality gear oil of proper grade can reduce the temps by 15-20F, thereby keeping it out of the sludge temperature zone.

I haven't read the paper on this fluid, but "seat of the pants" evaluation after a thousand miles on this fluid (in the heat) is really good. We'll see if the cold characterisitics match.

Heat in Chicago?

In my 330ci I use either M1 or Castrol Syntec 75w/90 with 15k change intervals.

Both come out looking pretty near pristine. I know Castrol takes a bashing here but their Syntec gear oil is as close as you'll get to the original "lifetime" SAF-XO fill. Both M1 and Castrol perform about the same.

I did have a very short run with Redline 75w/90 and it caused the car to have a driveline clunk (right away)!!.

I changed it out 2k miles later and it was cooked!!! Something didn't agree with something!!!

So I use Redline MTL in the trannie and either of the other two in the diff. At 106k miles the driveline is quiet. Cheers all!

The limited slip in my E24 M6 chattered after a 30 minute lapping session when I used Redline(yes, I used the 75W-90 that contains the LSD additive). The LSD in my E36/5 318ti has been filled with BMW OEM(Castrol SAF-XJ) 75W-140 oil, Mobil 1 75W-90, Valvoline Synpower 75W-90, and I'm currently running RP 75W-140. I can't say that I've noticed any difference between those oil on the street or on the track.
