I was in need of a GOOD mower to cut my Florida St. Augustine lawn - 1/4 acre. My internet search on the JD website stated "Cast iron cylinder liner" for the JS20, JS30 and the JS40 mowers. Went to my local Lowes and bought the JS40. Mulching was pretty good as I have NO intention in emptying a bag every two "swipes". I was bit apprehensive about the claim of the cast iron liner on this mower, especially for the $500. it cost. E-mail with B&S told me flat out that the engine was an 875 Series with a "standard aluminum bore". Talk about being P.O'd.... After repeatedley being told by JD that my JS40 had the liner, they informed me several days later that they have a "website problem" and the mower DID NOT have the liner. As this mower is also offered for sale "Online", can you say "INTERNET MAIL FRAUD?"... I have registered a complaint with the Florida and Illinois Atty. General about this very deceptive trade practice and will keep you'all informed. Even after almost TWO WEEKS, they are STILL advertising this line - the JS20,30, and 40 with the cast iron cylinder liner. (Go to their site and SEE FOR YOURSELVES).. I returned my JS40 to Lowes and told them of this "mis-representation" and told them it wasn't their fault, but JD's in their ad. Finally bought a TORO 20057 at a local business - LOVE IT... A REAL engine - Intek PRO, Cast iron liner, Mulches like a blender, NO grass left behind at all, AND the best benefit ever, an oil filter... I figure that over a MINIMUN 10 year life, my pro-rated cost is only $65./Year vs the $50./Year with most any other mower. The TORO "Personal Pace" system is the nuts. Goes just as fast, or as slow as you need to, although even with a good summers grass growth, the engine doesn't slow AT ALL. If you buy, you WILL be pleased..

I assume you bought the Toro at some local mom & pop store not a nationwide chain like Home Despot? Does Toro sell to any nationwide chains? Anway, that's what I did as well - bought a Toro from a local lawnmower shop. Most products are cheapened out for Home Despot, Lowe's, Wal-Mart, etc.

YUP, Mom and Pop, Father and Son - My local dealer, REV-CUT, Cocoa Fl had this baby in stock and couldn't get there fast enuf to purchase. The only offerings at the "big box stores" were of the FWD TOROS, which, in my way of thinking, just does NOT get the drive power to where it belongs, AT THE REAR WHEELS.

For what ever reason, the OPE industry is horrible at maintaining their websites

. They are all innacurate. Probably at one time that model had a briggs with a liner. IMO, the liner would be the least of my worries. That flat-head briggs would chug along fine without it & outlast the rest of the mower. Like you say, it said liner, so it should have had what it spec'd.

The thing will last for 30 years with an aluminum bore. What are you worried about?

Looks like YOU are another consumer who does not care what they receive for their purchasing dollar. As for an aluminum bore lasting 30 years, no fricking way.

,seen/worked on many alum bores there all
shot around 300hrs+/-,i have a POS 11hp Briggs now that
blow's oil and is a dog, Briggs are the worse too.

Actually, the aluminum bore in B+S engines is not that great. It is harder than bare aluminum, and will last an estimated 125 hours of use before wear affects emissions.

The aluminum "Nikasil" bores are far better than cast iron. So, be sure of what you purchase.

As I have mentioned before, the EPA requires EVERY engine to be rated in hours of emissions compliance. It is a very good indicator of engine lifespan. A, B, C, = 500, 250, 125 = extended, intermediate, moderate.

That is for small bore engine.

250, 500, 1000 for larger displacement engines.

Tiny engines have a lower hourly rating still. I am not certain but I think it is 50, 125, 300.

Look at the sticker on your engine!

JD WEBSITE UPDATE.... Just checked the JD website and after about TWO weeks from my first discovering the fact that the JS series mowers did NOT have the cast iron liner, they have finally corrected the "Website Error", under the DURABILITY heading. It now states - "Deck is stamped from 14-gauge (.074 in.) thick steel for reliable performance Wheels have one-piece molded rubber tread for superior traction and long life".... NOWHERE does it say antyhing about the liner.... For those of you that indeed checked their website after my first posting, you will see this correction.... About Da-- time...

AHHHHH, I feel better now, bringing JD "To Justice".... Not only for me, but, for all of the forum readers that may have considered a JS purchase thinking that it had the liner for an extended life....

Hank (just one of Ralph Narders "helpers")....

I agree with jsharp. Hank69 did a good thing. Sure, many people won't know the difference ... but the companies shouldn't misrepresent themselves ... as JD clearly was doing here.

As much as I love JD, I think the bean counter mentality has caught up with their company like so many others.

My workplace buys JD almost exclusively and I can tell you that I am on the phone every year clearing up maintenance manual errors:

"S" rated oil for a diesel engine.

Most recently, on a diesel compact tractor, the manual stated the total coolant capacity was 2.5 quarts. After dogging corporate customer service, they finally admitted it holds 4.5 quarts - a potential engine damaging difference if you flushed and refilled the whole system.

My newest 4' brush hog mower has a Chinese gear box.

JD has toppled off my pedestal......but I still like them!

Anybody in there right mind should have known it would take more than only 2.5 qt.s.
