My son just purchased a 1997 VW Jetta with a 1.9 diesel in it and the maintance of it falls on you-know-who. With no history and 220,000km. on the motor, I thought I would run the first 1000km. on Delco 15W40 (to use up some I had left over) and then switch to ESSO XD-3 0W40 synthetic with 5000km oil changes. Any thoughts on this plan or on the car. We are from Ontario so it will not be long before we start to see some cold weather. Roger

Personally I'd extend the drain interval out to at least 10,000 km's and have no worries about it.

What are the ratings on the Esso 0W-40 that you mention ?

With a lot of miles on the car and no maintenance history, you might want to do what I did when I bought my Jetta TDI. Consider starting off with an Auto-RX treatment and then switch over to the oil of your choice. Check out the "additives" forum on this website or visit the Auto-RX website for more info.

The factory recommended OCI is 7500 miles / 12,000 Kms. This is assuming regular oil is used. Using synthetic oil you should be able to go at least 10,000 miles / 16,000 Kms.

220,000 Kms is only 136,000 miles. Don't be afraid to use a full synthetic oil. Since you're in Canada you should be able to find Petro-Canada oils. PC Duron synthetic 5w-40 is a very good oil.

Roger,

FWIW- I have a 1.9TDI with 52,000 miles, and use a full synthetic 5w-40 (with emphasis on the 5)in the winter, because of its cold weather start characteristics.

I would have no heartburn with using 15-40 in the summer, but with 10,000 mile oil changes, summer and winter tend to blur when it comes to changing oil.

Thanks for all your help. I am going to use ESSO XD-3 0W40 and go for aprox. 10,000 km. oil changes--that is if I can get him to bring it over for his free oil change--the price of being both a father and an oil nut!

Good choice! A few other things you probably should know about the 1.9 diesel:

* When was the timing belt changed last? These engines are interferance-type engines, and if the timing belt or any of its associated hardware fails, you can pretty much kiss the engine bye-bye. Without a maintenance history, you don't know when it was changed last, so it would be a good idea to look into having it changed.

* If the engine is turbocharged, synthetic oil is pretty much mandatory on account of the turbocharger. Also, synthetic oil, a good quality synthetic oil, such as Delvac-1 and presumably the XD-3, promotes better intake cleanliness. You might want to look into cleaning the intake -- they can get fairly restrictive over time on the VW diesels.

* 10,000 miles is the modern OCI recommended for VW diesels, and UOA's with good quality oils such as Delvac-1 (and likely XD-3 synthetic) show that the oil can safely run at least 50% longer than that without any mods to the factory oil filtration system.

* www.TDIclub.com is an excellent resource for owners of VW diesels, and on there, you will find discussion forums for owners of the 3rd-generation Jettas equipped with diesel-fired engines. Its a very valuable resource, check it out.

Good luck!
