Edith finally "stifled" herself.

Great actress. Made millions laugh. As a kid I used to feel so sorry for her on All in the Family when Archie would be nasty to her. In some ways she reminded me of my own mother (a not so smart version).
Rest in peace.

All you young BITOG'rs might take a look @ some of the old All in the Family episodes. Very explosive topics such as racism, rape, bigotry, infidelity all dealt with candidly and with the raw emotion that comes with the territory. Jean Stapleton and Carroll O'Connor together were so convincing, I'm sure a lot people thought that's how there were.

The "All in the Family" Curse
Archie and Maude have died mysteriously. So has Sherman Hemsley. Tonight we learn Jean Stapleton has passed away

I agree. I just read an article about her and the show and how she was the image of "the fading role of women in the home," while "Gloria" was the "new woman of the future." My feeling was she always had a little more wisdom than anyone else and definitely a lot more patience.

Rest in peace Edith/Jean

A real pro, not just a one-note actor who found her niche. Carroll O'Connor was, too. If you see an old episode, its pretty clear that "Meathead" and Archie were supposed to be equals, as were Edith and her daughter, but the elder actors overwhelmed the younger actors.

Those old shows don't hold up too well. Too topical, I think. They certainly were a sensation at the time.

Pfft. They were all old - no curse. You've listed some very fine actors we've lost, all of whom were on shows that weren't only entertaining, but were thought provoking. All in the Family was definitely a few steps above most of the vacuous garbage that's on TV these days.

All In The Family was the tame American version of the English Till Death Do Us Part - Alf Garrnet makes Archie Bunker look like a boy scout. We had both - AITF was funny, TDDUP was scary...I guess because it cut closer to home.
