First post.
I have a 1990 JD 240 garden tractor with 6 speed trans, it calls for, John Deere low-viscosity Hy-Gard lubricant (J20D) or Type F Automatic Transmission fluid.
The transmission has a lot of play, it might be the drive chain.
What would be a good oil that is heavier, but less then 90 wt gear oil.
Thanks

I have the 260 I rebuilt everything except for the transmission. While I'm not certain what oil would suffice there are folks that have run 15w-50 or 5w-50 synthetic engine oil in hydrostatic transmissions. I'd assume if it's good enough for them it should work for these? Have you tried replacing the drive belt & tension springs just to make sure it's slop coming from the transaxle? Also, I can't find in the tech manual where it states type F as suitable. Just says you need 1 gallon of the JD J20D

For 1990 that should use gear oil?
I thought it was only 1992 model that used low viscosity hygard?

does it have newer retrofit transmission?

edit: I googled:

the Deere 240 operated with gear shift and clutch pedal. Clutch must be used to shift between gears. Transmission should be not shifted on the move while under heavy load. For the 1992 model year, serial number 130001, the brake changed to a wet disc internal to the transmission. Those transmissions called for low-viscosity Hy-Gard lubricant instead of gear oil.

If these are the properties of the John Deer J20D trans oil, you need much lower viscosity oil than 80 or 90 wt grade, most likely SAE20 grade or hydraulic oil (ATF)as stated in this data sheet:
https://www.49northlubricants.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/3330-PI.pdf

If you need the viscosity stated in the above document - viscosity @100C 7.2, you most likely need 75W manual transmission oil which equals SAE20 viscosity.
https://ravenol-usa.com/en/produkt/...missions-and-drive-axis/ravenol-mtf-3-sae-75w

However, if you need lower viscosity than 90 wt grade, you can use any 10W40 motorcycle oil which equals to 80 wt gear oil or 20W50 motorcycle oil which equals 90 wt gear oil.

This Motul 10W40 Transoil equals 80 or low 90 wt gear oil (you can find it on eBay for $20 a quart):

Product data sheet - it's API GL-4:

This is a manual transmission, with a dry brakes, at first they called for 90wt, and J20D or type F for wet brakes.
Then they called for, John Deere low-viscosity Hy-Gard lubricant (J20D) or Type F Automatic Transmission fluid in both.
There could have been a problem with 90wt being to heavy.
I'm looking for something in-between, ( because of the wear ), I don't know what properties for the manual transmission their looking for.
I would think a manual would need different properties then a hydrostatic.
I did think of Shell T6 5W-40 oil or ISO 46 or 68 hydraulic oil, but I don't know if that has the properties it needs
"Japanese" did mention 4 qts. of Motul 10W-40 ouch, and some other oils.
Here is a viscosity chart

Thanks Everyone

If the viscosity required for your transmission is this:
viscosity @40°C 34 cSt
viscosity @100°C 7.2 cSt
per this document:
https://www.49northlubricants.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/3330-PI.pdf

Any 5W30, 10W40, 20W50, 80W, 90W will be too viscous or thick for your application.

You'll need hydraulic oil 68 the most or MTF 75W. I'm driving my Camry stick shift with this German oil and is very low viscosity outstanding API-GL4 fluid that matches my Toyota requirements, not sure about yours:
https://ravenol-usa.com/en/produkt/...missions-and-drive-axis/ravenol-mtf-3-sae-75w
It's a bit pricy though, but is available on eBay and Amazon.
