I had always wanted to get a .22 , maybe a 223, just to have fun with, shoot targets at the farm etc. I've given up though, as a result of the laws in my country. If i were going to have fun I want to do it on my terms, not the draconian laws I am subject to. so i have resigned myself to not having a rifle. It's sad, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. I guess they achieved what they want, to have an honest and law abiding citizen give in...

crinkles, giving up is absolutely the last thing that you should do, as that's exactly what they want you to do, and why licences are now $200 for 5 years etc. etc.

I have never seen ammo sales figures since the "uniform" gun laws were set, however, my club has about 80 members who were lucky to shoot 50 rounds of .22 a year, who started shooting thousands of rounds in club activities.

If you want to hunt, reacreational/vermin, you only need a property owner to give you a letter stating that you are allowed to shoot rabbits on his property...join the SSAA, and get (IIRC) $20M of public liability insurance, which helps when talking to property owners.

If you join SSAA, you can shoot at their ranges, or have attendances at gun shows counted towards your 4 attendances.

If you joins a NSWRA club (Coffs has a really good club, our members are up there regularly), they have r8imfire and cerntrefire for $128 (NSWRA), plus what the club charges (ours around $75) for targets, trophies etc.

Don't give up.

I had my 15th B'Day present at risk when the laws came in, forcing me into a club. Now I've got 6 rifles, and some new friends.

Closest would be Casino rifle club, but I don't know anyone from a bar of soap (ha...) and rent... so where do i put the bloody safe mate?

NSW, the safe has to be either 150Kg free weight, or bolted to either a fram or a floor with 4 off 1/2" fasteners.

Can be either coach bolted to a framed structure (framed garage), dynabolted to the floor, whatever.

Mine is a "1 tonner" toolbox, bolted to the floor of the back room, but could similarly be bolted to the garage floor with dynabolts. Had to add an extra lock (to make 3), and back it up against a wall so that the hinges weren't at risk.

Made a timber "rack" to suit 5 rifles (need to make another, or drop the Browning).

To avoid damaging structures, I enquired once as to whether a 1 tonner box with 150Kg of plate steel would comply, and it was suggested that if you could adequately prove that there was the correct weight, it would be OK.

A 1 tonner with the floor lined with 10cm wide strips of 25mm plate would easily pass muster.

crinkles - never give up, that's what they want you to do. Jump through the hoops, and encourage others to do the same. It's the right thing to do for your country.

Once you start jumping through hoops you are expected to jump through even more hoops next time around. The sensible thing to do is skirting the law altogether.

Call a shop that does a lot of metalwork and see what they can do for you. I tried to find the price of steel over there, but I couldn't.

Also, please ignore Mori's weak attempt at trolling.

Scrap rates are around $200/tonne...naturally, that's what the merchants pay you, so their sell rate will be double or thereabouts.

For 150Kg, you'll need around 20 litres of whatever steel plate/bar that you can get.

Took up my shooting association membership again today.

As for safekeeping I might stick with a regular safe with coach screws into the frame.

might visit the range this weekend, but lots of rain forecast.

We need a FAFC fund.

Firearms for Crinkles fund!

Too bad such garbage inhibits the law abiding citizen. I'm sure the guys that break all the rules fill follow this one, just because.

Pablo, it'd probably be illegal

You are exactly right, I'vebeen doing a lot of reading, and statistics/studies on the issue.

All the baddies do, is to get weapons from O/S smuggled in. Plenty of "networks" to do it through. Joe Blow wanting to shoot milk cartons gets to jump through hoops. All those terrilbe .22's being used in armed robberies, you know.
