Italian Tuneup really reduces carbon deposits?

To clean out the carbon, you need to run lean. Leanest burn condition is steady speed highway cruising at the speed that gives you the best FE. So just set your cruise at a reasonable speed and go for a drive for a couple hours.

In my old Mazda3 service manual, it also gave a procedure to decarbon the engine. Once the engine was fully warmed up, hold the engine at 3000 RPM in neutral for 5 mins.

I prefer to just go for a drive.

I can attest that it makes a HUGE difference in LD diesels, especially IDI ones-if you baby & short trip a diesel, gunk will build up rapidly, more so in an EGR equipped one. Need to get it fully warmed up, with quality oil, and beat on it as God intended...

No, I mean push your engine hard, all the time. Might help lessen the time spent at traffic lights and make for smoother highway merge points, too. Why have the horsepower if you're not going to use it?
