Still see it on the shelf.. and in all the newer fancy shmancy oil brands as well... Is this just a kow tow to all the old folks out there that still believe its the best thing since sliced bread?

I thought it was hella obsolete.. What would you use it in these days?

Im giving it a try in the wifes Jetta. If it does a better job with the valve train noise, ill start using Maxlife 10W40 in stead of 5W30.

In some cars, even if 10w30 is called for, 10w40 makes the engine perform better, or at least quieter.

Another thing that makes it appealing to some is that 10w40 does not have the same sulphated ash limitations as any Xw20 or Xw30.

Many new water cooled motorcycles are being built and specifying 10w40. There are also millions of older water cooled motorcycles that said to use 10w40.

2nd on the PZ. I'm pretty shure API keeps the 10w-40 grade available to blenders to mix dino 40 weight and make 5w-40 exclusively a "synthetic" product. I'm shure the gap between them is quite quite small...except in price.

I'd imagine 10-40 would be a good choice for an engine that is consuming a thinner oil like a 5-30 or 10-30.

Maybe a little more cushioning for bearings that have a lot of miles on them, or normally loose tolerances, and need a little more protection.

With a 10W you get better low temp pumpability too, compared to a 20W-50.

A lot of tuner kids burn out their engines on 5w30, maybe too thinking they're "protecting" better because they used a synth like M1 of RP. Those cars burn oil and even smoke eventually. I tell them, if you mod the engine, mod the oil too, 10w-40 is the way to go.

A lot of people are "old school", just think of the amount of people that are car savy and not OCD BITOGER's. They use 10w40 because they grew up being told that is - "what you use".

Better yet Rotella 15w40....

10w-40 for those of us who don't want to drop the $$ on 0w-40 or 5w-40 and our cars call for them (both of mine). As long as MaxLife Blend 10w-40 is still $16.50 for 5qts at Wal-Mart, and my Subaru is still leaking a bit, I think that's what we will stick with.
