I'm looking for an used car for my teenager son and this 2005 corolla just showed up priced for only $2000 (they sell for about $5000-$6000) in a nearby city 60 miles away. Nice car on the picture, low miles. The same car with slightly different description showed up in a city 120 miles away in the other direction. Same phone and same picture listed. I texted and no one texted me back. Is this some kind of scam?

If it's too good to be true, then yes it's a scam. I've seen similar things with higher priced minivans, that are at rock bottom prices. When you email the person the Van is stored on the other side of the country and they will ship it to you, blah blah blah. They relocated, had company cars, got them as part of a divorce, etc.

Regards, JC.

Yeah, they will give a bunch of reasons why you can't see the car in person. Then they'll need you to wire them the money or etc. They may even show a faked title via a jpg file or whatever.

Craigslist is the wild west. Buyer beware.

You are probably right. The area code is the opposite corner of the country and no one even answers the phone. I guess it's operated via email from Nigeria.

I see the same thing up here, but it's always a John Deere tractor that's priced at half or one quarter the retail value.

Yes they're all over the Phoenix Cragslist when looking for Toyota's. They usually have prices like $2,032. What they do is have you pay through PayPal on ebay and then they say they'll ship the car. Big scam.

Is it some Army dude selling? With a phishy sounding name? I remember that picture. He did same with a Subaru Forester 2006...

1000% a scam.

NEVER WIRE MONEY.

That person never got back to me but managed to put up a third listing for the same car in yet another city near me in the last hour. Every listing has a random 2 digit ending of the price, probable to go around Craigslist rules. I went ahead and flagged the listings.

I see $2000 cars that raise my eyebrows posted up in this area all time, if it's too good to be true then probably is.

I remember being in dire need of a vehicle once, looking at a Subaru. I actually did e-mail this guy. Always a year 2006, low random number mileage, truly strange price. I asked detailed questions in the e-mail. I got a pre-written e-mail back very quickly, about he in the Army and wire money and title mailed Certified after wiring money.

RED FLAGS:
1. WIRING MONEY
2. CANT SEE THE CAR
3. POOR GRAMMAR E-MAIL
4. ALWAYS SAME CAR, LOOKING TOO PERFECT, PROBABLY LIFTED FROM A REAL AUTOTRADER LISTING... SEEMS OFF.

IT IS A SCAM.

Guy had some clever canned fake name, too.

The only problem I have is that they DO "get" people.

The scammers do ad mining on the internet from ebay, autotrader, etc to gather photos and info. They then craft their fake ad using that info. Sometimes they inquire of a seller on a legit ad and act like a serious buyer in order to garner more info or some documentation they can then turn around and use in their scam.

This is probably a scam, but area codes mean nothing. My sister had a RI area code in California, and my brother has a North Carolina area code in Washington. I work with someone in MA who has a Florida area code.
