I just changed my fluid and followed the manual exactly. After draining, I filled up the reservoir to the Max line and started the car. It was making a pretty bad metal sound after going back and forth a few times to cycle the fluid. I looked at the reservoir and it was bone dry. It was also whining pretty bad at first then got better after I added more coolant. It still has a slight whining to it at high rpm. So, is it dying? Is it dead? What could have gone wrong?

What fluid do you use ? ATF or PSF or Coolant ?

My E430 made fairly loud whining couple years ago when I turned the wheel in either direction more than 20-30 degrees after the car had been driven for more than 10-15 minutes. I siphoned the reservoir and replaced with Maxlife PSF, a week later I did the same thing and repeated the siphon/refill every week until the quart bottle of PSF was used. The noise was gone on the third siphon/refill and didn't come back yet, I will do the same procedure if the whining noise ever come back or do it every 3-4 years.

Gosh, I hope you didn't put "Coolant" in there...

If so, drain everything outta there!

It should move the air eventually. Try a few turns with the cap off, that may help. I do it the same way as HTSS_TR - I use a hand lotion plunger to drain the reservoir only. Drain and add Maxlife Dex III ATF (required for Toyotas) every oil change till 2 quarts are gone. Quiet as a mouse now. May not get it all but so what, like doing a tranny drain, just do it a few times, better than getting air.

If you get all their air out, and it still makes bad noises, replace some of the PSF with Lubegard PSF additive. It helped quiet down the noisy pump on my mom's car.

Before you work the steering rack back and forth, drive the front wheels onto some stacked newspapers. The slippage between the paper layers will let the wheel turn freely without raising the pump pressure so much and should let trapped air in the lines escape easier.

If it was your Honda, did you use the correct PS fliud. On my 2007 Civic I drained/refilled with AAP Honda fluid and its smoother and very quiet after 110K miles on the original fluid. You can get this fluid very cheap using the AAP codes.

I remove the return line and plug the port on the pump. Fill it up with fluid and start the motor keep the resivor full and stop when you get clean fluid out of the return line. This will get all the air out.

I used Honda OEM PS fluid. I put the coolant in the radiator.

I'll put it back up on stands and try to bleed all the air out... I went on a 20 mile drive to run some errands and it seems to still be whining a little when cruising at 60mph or so (1.8k rpm).

Thanks! I used that tonight!

Should I do this with the reservoir open, closed, little of both? I see the fluid bubbling around in there when the car is on... don't want it to fly all over.
