Where are the "Castrol syntec sucks" threads? I always see mobil1 is this and mobil1 is that...

I dont see why people can be so antagonistic to one particular brand.

Oh, we've been there with the Syntec is overpriced not-full-synthetic stuff before.

However, Castrol makes GC, which is Syntec and a true synthetic oil, as well as a darn good one at that, so the generalization "Castrol sucks" wouldn't work.

Now, if we found out that Mobil 1 0W-20 or 0W-40 were true synthetics still, then probably the "Mobil 1 is #@$%!" headlines will slowly go away also...

Mobil 1 is still a very good motor oil.

The problem some of us have with it is that (1) it is marketed at the very upper end of the price scale, (2) it has historically claimed itself to contain an expensive PAO base (which justified and induced its use by some), (3) there have been recent controversial (and disputed) test results showing several varieties as primarily composed of cheaper Group III stocks, and (4) some UOAs have been less than spectacular, with higher than average Fe readings.

Volvohead, that was so clear and yet so concise. Well done!

Well look at all the high end sports cars that run Mobil 1. It's factory fill in a lot of high performance engines.

The Mobil 1, 0w-40 (PP of -65F, FP of +455F),their Delvac 1, 5w-40 and their high end motorcycle oils still PAO based. So I'd recommend using one of those if you have concerns about a Group III based synthetic in a high performance application. The Mobil 1, 0w-20 most likely also has a significant percentage of PAO basestock in order to get the required low temp viscometrics.

Since the EP formulations have gone the API/SM route, the M1/0w-40 also has the most robust add pack of any Mobil formulation with the exception of Delvac 1 and their MC oils, based on the recent UOA data I've seen.

So I'd suggest:

For 20wt applications, M1/0w-20
For 30wt applications, M1/0w-40 (its functionally a "thick" 30wt oil anyway)
For 30wt/40wt applications, Delvac 1, 5w-40
For 50wt applications, the M1, 20w-50 Motorcycle oil

The 0w-40 may well still be PAO. But it also appears to contain something else, and in significant quantity, as it shears quickly and substantially in any higher stress application. Not my first choice for a high performance application other than at short intervals. They'd be better off taking the #@$%! out and just building it as a 0w-30, which is what it is most of the time.

But last I checked, the Delvac 1 was still on the "A" list in my book. The competition in that segment is much more aggressive and the average consumer much more discerning.

volvohead,

I was trying to be nice...;)
I'd also choose the Delvac 1 - even for 30wt applications.

That doesn't necessarily mean much. Mobil may have gotten the contract to be the factory-fill oil because they were the lowest bidder.

I like castrol... but I like the Q-torque marketing #@$%! the best.. however I purchased 40qts at
I think the best post here was the
EXXONmobil post EXXON probably dictated a higher profit margin
so they cheapened it. does it really matter to 99% of people..
no (we are mostly the other 1%)
