Mobil 1 is still a very good motor oil.

The problem some of us have with it is that (1) it is marketed at the very upper end of the price scale, (2) it has historically claimed itself to contain an expensive PAO base (which justified and induced its use by some), (3) there have been recent controversial (and disputed) test results showing several varieties as primarily composed of cheaper Group III stocks, and (4) some UOAs have been less than spectacular, with higher than average Fe readings.

What is the deal with some of the post I have seen on here lately about Mobil1?

Let me know when you are unhappy. This is the internet, anyone can post anything, true or not.

Group III == natural oil does it not? How can they label natural oil as a synthetic?

You should be writing copy!

"Why buy synthetic oil for you vehicle, if you can now get the finest, natural oil known to man!"

I agree with previous post. Anger should be directed towards US court and Castrol Syntec. If they can get away with it, then guess what?

If castrol can market group3 as synthetic and not get as much as a slap on the wrist, then why lay the blame on mobil1 which prices identically to syntec?

Personally, we can all thank castrol for mobil1's demise. Pity since I can vouch for their oil after using them for 7 years.

Because it was Mobil that underscored and emphasized the "Group III is not synthetic, but our PAO is" philosophy in the first place, and thereafter exploited that philosophy as a marketing hook with more sophisticated consumers.

That's why.

Correct, but the Mobil Oil Corp that defended the definition of synthetic is long gone. Mobil1 is now an Exxon product and any changes they made in the formulation was done to improve profit rather than performance.

Even though they go by the name "ExxonMobil", it should read as EXXONmobil.

Where are the "Castrol syntec sucks" threads? I always see mobil1 is this and mobil1 is that...

I dont see why people can be so antagonistic to one particular brand.

The following info needs to go as a Sticky:

Quote:

The trend toward globalized lubricant specifications and worldwide OEM specifications is now creating more demand for Group III base oils. This is particularly true in North America due to the 1999 ruling by the National Advertising Department of the Better Business Bureau that allows Group III base oils to be considered synthetic.

Advent of Modern Hydroprocessing

According to that, all of the variants of "synthetic" and "fully synthetic" are fair game to include Group III.
