I've always used Volvo Penta 30wt synthetic in my 2005 5.0 Gxi-E. I see now that Volvo only sells 10w-40 which I assume is a suitable replacemnet for the 30wt. My question is, Is there any reason I couldn't use Mobil 1 10w40 (High Mileage) instead of the Volvo 10w40. I know Mobil 1 is an excellent product for my car but is it ok for my boat? I would gladly use the Volvo oil but I have to buy it online and I can get the Mobil 1 at the local WalMart.

Is that a diesel or gas engine?

All the sportfishing boats Ive seen run Ursa 40wt or 15w40. Id personally consider an HDEO.

Gas. It's a 5.0 litre gm engine. What's a good HDEO synthetic that I don't have to search the far ends of the earth for, preferably in a straight 30wt?

I've found a Mercruiser 20w-40 full synthetic oil locally. I'm thinking this would be a good replacement for the VP 30wt synthetic. Any thoughts?

If you don't mind a nosebleed price, the Quicksilver/Mercury oils are usually decent, and won't hurt you. I don't know whose supplying them these days. Years ago it was Warren. I never bought into the special additive package hype with them. And we never had a problem in not using them.

Like JHZR2, I'm partial to the HDEOs. See lots of cases of Rotella in our boat yard come haul out time.

My same response as on iBoats:

"Mobil 1 15W-50. Have a buffer against fuel dilution thinning and mechanical shearing, both of which are real life occurrences in marine use engines. Probably wind up with an at operating temperature viscosity of 30 in the end."

I have been sampling my mercruiser 350 mag for the last few years with various oils. Here is the quick synopsis:
Mercruiser 25w40 sheared to a 20 wt in 45 hours use and wear metals were a touch elevated.
Mercruiser 25w40 semi syn did well in shearing and wear metals.
Delo 15w40 did very well in shearing and wear metals
Rotella 15w40 did well in shearing, but not quite as we'll in wear metals.

All told, the Delo for $12 gallon was the best bang for the buck.

Yep, unless your running something exotic any of the big three 15w40 oils you can get for $12 a gallon at Walmart are fine. I wouldn't spend big bucks on any manufactures oil.

Delo, Delvac, Rotella, take your pick.

I have never seen a marine engine suffer an oil failure that wasn't related to a lot of water getting in it somehow, and neglect/abuse that lead up to it.

Some of the go fast guys were having cam problems, but again, those are more exotic motors.
