Yep that's exactly it. :) She probably didn't know the first thing about the difference between the oils, just towing the line that the boss told her to do. It happens a lot in retail, no need to let it bother you or anything.

Brush it off as a life experience. If I stopped shopping at stores where people who worked there [censored] me off, I would be shopping online, but I have gotten screwed by online retailers also...Don't let it bother you. Someone else will soon replace her on the stupid chain of experiences you will have.

How did you figure that out?? Really..that's kinda creepy. :)

Yep, it's the AZ on Conway Road, between Gatlin and Curry Ford Road. They have PU, but only in 5W30 and 10W30.

LOL don't mean to be creepy at all. I live near there and she sounds just like the girl I have dealt with in there as well! Sounded very familiar. Im glad they were carrying the PU!

I would have overwhelmed her with oil knowledge comparing the PU to the junk she tried to upsell you until her head exploded and/or she dropped the attitude.

Sounds like a bunch of thin skinned consumers, I just chuckle at them and tell them no thanks!

You buy what you want, and you ignore the "helpful" advice.
When I last shopped PB, a month or so back, for an oil change special on Syntec (wanted to add a little to my GC stash), the woman at the counter asked me how long you could run the stuff.
I was impressed by her willingness to actually ask.
I told her it was a BMW LL-98/LL-01 oil, and so could be run for a long time, although I planned on using it in the Subaru, and could not exceed 7.5K while the engine was under warranty.
And yes, Subaru does allow the use of API SL oils.

Not likely.

I've taken (and passed) the ASE Parts Specialist test (and then re-certified 5 years later). I don't know if they changed it since then, but in '93 and '98 it seemed to be primarily geared towards merchandising more than actual parts counterman knowledge.

I informed one of the test writers of this. He was a regional manager for Hi/Lo Auto Supply. My honesty and candor about the test put me on his [ expletive respectfully deleted] list.

There are Parts Countermen (and women) and then there are Countermonkeys. Your chances of getting a Countermonkey at the discount chains is embarrassingly high. But they do employ good, honest, professional Countermen (and women).

a lot of the big box stores train their employees to push the "item (or deal) of the month". It helps the store rankings, meaning the district manager won't be by to coach you on how to sell the deal of the day.
in an AZ, the endcaps when you walk in noticably change each month. One month it could be Lucas Oil stuff, Syvania headlamps, Meguiar's wash & wax, tools, etc.. those particular companies pay AZ a little extra to have their products showcased so when people walk in, it's the first (or 2nd) thing they see.
AZ does have some spiff programs, but it's usually a hard sell due to the price of whatever it is.. it's usually not an easy sell/common type of item.
the AZ people work to make the store numbers look good, and the manager can get a bonus. It's also about personal stats as well, you get nothing but some recognition, no monetary compensation, unless the store manager does something on his/her own.

Usually those who push a particular item/deal is because they're knowledge is less than basic, so for them to contribute to the store they try to sell the deal instead.
They also could've been told to sell like 10 oil change deals in a day and they'll get a $10 bonus or won't get yelled at later.

I had a girl from kragen's come into my store (long ago I was an AZ store manager/trainer). She needed a wheel bearing for her car. She spit out a number that didn't cross into Timken (which AZ sells). So I asked, is that a chicago rawhide number, as I got the cross ref. book. She said no it's USA bearings. the number wasn't in the computer OR the book. So I said I'll look it up by car. So I get the arrogant attitude.. you don't have USA bearings? I reply, no.. never heard of them. What do you sell? timken. Never heard of that. So I ask.. you've never heard of Timken? One of the biggest bearing manufacturers in the world? No. So I ask.. what about BCA? No. I was floored!
So the girl calls her manager at the kragen and asks if timken is OK. we laughed.. glad we didn't get written up for it!!

that noob cashier wouldn't be fired.. why? She can breathe and passed the application test. No other reason.

The head shake is what probably got to you. It's small gestures like that without accompanying speech when 3rd parties are watching that really seems to trigger most people's irritate button. I know it would have gotten to me. You have something to say to me, like I'm stupid, then say it. It's like they say it without having the consequence of saying it. What really sends me into the red is when the 3rd party laugh along with the gesture, as if to say, yeah, he is stupid.

Go back and have some fun by asking complex oil questions about superceding European specs and toss in some API validation tests for good measure.

Here's a good one, which is thicker at +20f, 5w-20 or 0w-30?

It's a trick question because dino 5w-20 is thicker but synth is thinner.

I try to shop at our local NAPA when I can. Those folks know what they are doing and treat you like you also know what you are talking about. And when I don't know what I am talking about, they offer to help!
