Interesting article about a company called Yieldstreet and real estate investments going bust.

One investor lost $400,000 and was lured by “invest like the 1%” ads.

The quoted clown is either lying or stupid. I'm not defending this POS company. But the whole "I didn't know the risk" is just really..."I might contact a lawyer I'm so desperate to get my money back". I'll bet dollars to donuts even this junky company has risk statements. In writing.

True.

But some people are easily fooled by…. 1% special sauce insider knowledge ads that will give investors substantial gains. Lots of scams out there involving the real estate boom in recent years.

I did have some REITs over the years if I wanted exposure to real estate markets.

Well people are fooled by 20% off the day after a 47% price increase too.

Nothing wrong with listed REITs in principle. There are so many types of public REITs one needs to focus a bit more, even before risk is taken into account. Private REITs are a whole different kettle of wax - and definitely get more risky - but this company was not a private REIT really, they could throw YOUR money at their whim. If that doesn't throw up a red flag, well, sorry chucko you rolled your dice. This guy didn't even look at historical returns and that would still be weakass lazy. And he violated one of my top investment rules. Idiot.

Wasn't a REIT. REIT's at least are subject to SEC scrutiny, whatever little that is worth.

Was a private startup doing basically flips on a commercial level, promising 20% gains. No different than Madoff really. Those people knew - or should have, then want to play victim. Fools and their money parting. No sympathy from me either.

I wonder how many times they got away with it and now some homeowner is left holding the bag.

"He invested $400,000 in two real estate projects: A luxury apartment building in downtown Nashville overseen by former WeWork CEO Adam Neumann’s family office, and a three-building renovation in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York. Each project had targeted annual returns of around 20%."

Well there it is, I missed that bit:

WeWork

It's easy to fool the general public with social media. It's actually scary moving forward. The come-ons on Facebook, AI generated images for AI investing using all the well known names out there for every successful CEO. It's unbelievable, I actually report them and FB has confirmed to me a number of them that were taken down because of my report. It's unbelievable how you get bombarded with this stuff once you click on them a few times.

But you cant stop the borderline stuff. One example unrelated, me living on the NC coast here. The entire world and anyone on Facebook who cant critically think, thinks this hurricane which is and will be hundreds of miles off the coast is a major threat. My neighbors who are in another country right now just contacted me to see how things are going as we are taking care of their home!
I was like OH MY GOD. Does anyone know that predictions in the worst area of the NC coast MAY bring 1 inch of rain (not a misprint, ONE INCH*LOL*) The talk of first 50 foot waves grew to 100 foot waves, yet for the worst part of the coast MAYBE 8 to 10 foot waves.

If your not ready for Erin your a fool. They changed Ian's track and gave evac orders less than 24 hours before it slammed into Florida, and no one expected Helene to crush Appalachia. If you don't get hit by Erin its not a waste. You will be ready for whatever is next.

Welcome to coastal living.

Massive shrinkage

Oh come on stop it now, you're being silly.
Ps. I lived a few miles from the ocean for over 40 years.

I wont comment further since this is an investment thread, however a valid example of marketing and false information.

Just an update. Yesterday while researching preferred issues I found alot of CEF preferreds. I did not know CEFs could issue preferred shares but I guess I can still learn in my state of advanced maturity. Several are rated solid investment grade by Moodys so I'm going to start accumulating them as I get powder dry instead of the BDC bonds I was buying.

I didn't say it was going to hit you, I said If you weren't prepared for it your a fool.

The weather service themselves say anything outside of 48 hours is an unknown. You posted a forecast not a flight plan.

Do whatever you want. This is why I don't feel empathy when the unprepared get run over.

Maybe a little empathy for not knowing, what they don't know?
It's a culture many are taught "the government will take care of us", and simply don't know any better.
It's one of those "grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change" etc..... issues.

Yeah, me either.
I look at all the hysteria because people are manipulated by mass media instead of the actual factual information from the NHC

I can’t wait till somebody has photos of those hundred foot waves, oh wait 50 foot waves. Oh hold on a minute maybe we’ll get a 10 footer in the Outer Banks. 😉

Then we will hear on how we missed a close call that never was to begin with.
All goes to lack of critical thinking, which much of the public is unable to anymore. Many decades ago there was a story about Chicken Little and the sky is falling.

After going through Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and not having electricity for 2 weeks we now always have some canned food and cases of water / Gatorade / etc… on hand.

Look at what happened in Asheville, NC with the disaster and flooding.

It doesn’t hurt to have stuff on hand for unexpected events.
