Just stumbled across this gentlemans site (He is a Certified trainer for GM, Ford, Chrysler and ASE Certified Tech) and though I would share. Engine Oil presentation is about 1/2 down the page. Surfing around his site, there is some good information on there for general auto repair.

I'll leave the debate on the oil presentation for others....

TBN between 60 and 100? What units does he measure TBN in?

Other than that, pretty decent collection of basic facts for an average Joe. Some generalizations here and there, but I suppose going into more detail would have made this presentation indigestible to most.

Interesting. I know that M1 does not recommend oil additives to be used with their oil, as I'm sure others do not as well. The last additive I used was the old STP back in the late 60s. Thought I was doing the right thing, but soon learned I wasn't

Looks like in decimal basis points, i.e. 600 is 600x0.1

Lots of good info, but a few things caught my eye.

In the PP, he shows a couple of grades of oils (10w-30 and 5w-20) and says that they DO NOT meet GM other requirements as if the oils were of poor quality. It seems to me the reason the two oils don't meet the GM specs is because GM doesn't spec them in their vehicles. It doesn't mean they're bad, just not called out for, so if they're not called for by the OEM, then why in the world would they issue an approval for it.

He also picked a couple of well known smaller oil manufacturers and poo-poo'd them because they didn't have an API approval. Not having that doesn't necessarily mean they're bad...

Cant be that old since the pictures of Mercedes E350 is the current 2010 model and so is the Audi S6

Pretty interesting stuff. I noticed a few things:

Royal Purple did not met the requirements apparently for the most recent American made vehicles.

The high mileage oils such as Mobil 1 HM are intended only for older vehicles with a lot of mileage.

Two oil additives are shown and the indication is that they are not approved. One is Marvel Mystery Oil and the other that is hidden somewhat is I think Lubegard Biotech Engine Protectant. But no oil additives seem to be approved other than a ZDDP additive for some older vehicles that need more ZDDP. Or else Rotella oil could be used in some older vehicles.

Using thicker oils apparently can cause serious problems in some vehicles. You need to use the viscosity recommended in the owner's manual.

I did not realize that so many Toyota vehicles had problems with engine sludge. Aside from some car and van engines the Highlander SUV was mentioned also.

From what was said it looks like conventional motor oil is supposed to be changed at about 5000 miles. It depends on service.

I checked the Mobil 1 oil site. If somebody is looking for an oil that has enough zinc for flat tappets the Mobil 1 15-50 had some 1300 ppm zinc.

Mobil 1 High Mileage had 1000 ppm zinc as compared to 900 ppm zinc for some of the other Mobil 1 oils.
