Bob is the oil guy is a very informative site with alot of good people and good information, this is why i joined.I have found it very educational.Personal experiences, stats, uoa,s are all good in my opinion. There are a few that i feel like to come on and start bullying people or simply starts fights which i feel is very sad.It breaks my heart to see grown men come on and gang up on someone. This is,nt a personal playground where you can vent out all you underlaying personal problems while embarrassing yourselves. Some members are not as knowledgable as others, and we need to be patient with them.Life is too short, try and get along.

I blame the violent smilies.

How true jamesonel, We were not born with what we know OR pretend to know. I'm almost 56 and still learn stuff.
I try to help people as I would want them to help me.
I worked at NAPA for 10 years and the most enjoyable thing was when customers new and old would come back or call and say "Thanks, That worked or man you saved me a ton!".

Very true. BITOG used to be full of engineers who worked in and knew the industry very well. Those professionals were willing to donate their valuable time just to help a stranger understand as much or as little as they wanted to know. Most of the knowledgeable people have left. [censored], even Bob left.

Now our 'experts' are working in Walmart or Taco Bell and giving us bad advice in the evenings. Or complaining how dumb everybody else is because they wouldn't get a price match at AA.

I would love to have been a member 10 years ago.

There still are a lot of VERY knowledgeable folks on here, and Ive learned a lot from many, and try to impart my knowledge and experience in return.

But like any site with 30-40k members (even if not all are active) as the readership grows, so does the breadth of the population, and the number of characters. Some will be know it alls with no real knowledge, others will know a lot and share it (or not). Such is how things go.

What is sad is when people either post a ton of meaningless stuff and dilute the good discussions, act like it is high school, or carry on with wife's tales like they re truth with no basis. All this causes friction.

Everyone has been guilty of at least some of it sometimes. Some are just constant characters. We see a LOT of complaints from a ton of users about each other and about stuff that often isnt seen by any because it is taken off before it is viewed much...

Don't let some worthless text on a computer monitor jab your emotions. Contact a member via PM and you'll find most are thoughtful human beings and not just a screen name.

This is one of my Favorite forums whether the topic is Add packs or world events. I have learned a lot here and enjoy some of the old threads when there seemed to be a higher percentage of knowledgeable people who replied.

I do find it amusing to watch relatively new posters start answering questions that they not too long ago, were asking themselves, as if they are a kid in elementary school going 'ooh oh oooohhh" with their hand raised when they know an answer. I've noticed my own tendency to do this, not so much on this forum, but hey, at least I admit I am a hypocrite.

I enjoy the worldwide participation and the many views expressed. There are a few broken records that seem to have an agenda, but they are easy to spot and ignore. Usually their opinions are vehemently stated as facts.

Good observations!

I was lurking around way back in 2002, and it was a much more professionally oriented forum back then.

Now you have members like Gearheadtool, offering "tips" to other noobs about how maintenance should be done. Now that is scary! The reason why is most ordinary noobs are naive and could be duped into following advice that could potentially be either dangerous or damaging to their person or vehicle. I think the mods have started to address this issue though.

Agreed, though I think my lurking started around 2004.

Since I've been a member it's only recently that I think a line has been crossed. Before that everyone here could post an experience and not be demonized or attacked however lately it seems that instead of just not posting, people will jump in to post negatively.
I'm not innocent and I'm not claiming to be. I still find the hair splitting threads to be extremely informative. Many of the more knowledgeable members will interpret for guys like me who don't know as much, which I think is going above and beyond since they don't really have to.
I've learned alot since joining here, and learn something new every day. It would be nice if guys who either don't have experience with,or just want to be negative would just pass by those particular threads so those of us who are exchanging experiences could carry on.
Such as the additive threads. Please post your experiences with whatever the topic of discussion is,whether it's good or bad it still adds to the conversation but if a person is just going to repeat the snake oil mantra blah blah blah just don't post. It adds nothing and makes those of us who are exchanging thoughts and ideas angry, then it seems to turn into a head hunt.
I would like to apologize to the forum for my behaviour the past few days. I let it get to me and reduced myself to a school yard name calling match. For that I am sorry.

When a person stands up and and admits his mistakes and says he,s sorry, you have to respect them for that, well done.Others that stiil poke and jab and try to reduce others to feel better, you are making a fool of yourself, i feel sorry for you.It may take more time for you to mature. We are all here to help each other, that is the beauty of a forum, people helping people. Appology accepted. "Be The Best You Can Be"

Usually the bullying or the name-calling eventually gets stopped by the mods. The real annoying posts are the ones by the same person who attack the same certain product in over 50% of their posts, and while in the same post, throw in a veiled political statement or the people who praise an exact certain product in over 50% of their posts. Yet these same people have a job completely unrelated to the automotive field, really never get their hands dirty and have the cars worked on by somebody other than themselves. I guess they don't realize that they get tuned out because of their constant drivel.

No one owes you an apology man. Right out of the gate you started a trolling thread to argue that GTX 10/30 was a better oil than HDEO. The responses you got were your own doing. In my opinion you were trolling. And now you start this bleeding heart thread in the oil additives section. Again it seems like trolling to me.

If you want to know the advantages of one oil over another in a given application, state the application and ask the question. People here will help you out as much as possible. But dont go trolling dude. Asking the board to "prove" things to you.

But I tell ya what, even tho you started out by putting your foot in your mouth, im willing to let bygones be bygones. If you need something just ask and if I dont know the answer, I know people here who would.

Just quit bagging on the members of the site, because 99% are really awesome people.

BITOG had a surge of name calling, etc, a few years ago. That subsided, probably because some of the parties left.

In recent months what I have seen is BITOG gangs.
lol.gif
But seriously, groups of members (new and old) take sides on an issue, and fight it out in threads gang style. It gets tiring, but all you can do is ignore those threads after the first read.

Very few members have engaged in this gang mentality, but they are frequent posters, so it has a significant effect.
