Interesting Chart of 5w50 oils

From the Ford Focus RS forums where 5w50 is specced. I've recently been thinking about switching to a Redline 10w40 for all my vehicles. Surprised how solid the Rotella T6 is relative to it's M1 and Castrol counterparts.

The HTHS is pretty interesting. My question is, how do these numbers look 5,000 miles into demanding use.

I would have expected Castrol Edge 5W50 to have a higher HTHS than 3.7 cP, more like 4.7 for a 50 grade oil. Maybe it's a typo and they are talking about Castrol 5W40.

Anyway, we have talked about shear and HTHS before here, and it seems the general rule of thumb is that HTHS (cP) falls off at about half the rate that 100C viscosity (cSt) falls.

It's hard to measure HTHS but easy to measure KV100 with an oil analysis. So get a virgin oil analysis (VOA) on your oil of interest before use, then a used oil analysis (UOA) after 5k miles in service. Expect the relative HTHS drop to be about half the relative KV100 drop.

That's the best that I can do. Maybe others can offer more advice.

Another set of errors in the table: Mobil 1 0w40 is 3.6, and Mobil 1 TurboDiesel Truck 5w-40 is 3.8
Not sure why there are so many errors in the table.

It's probably an old table. These specs change over time.

It's actually 4.1 cP, according to this PDS:

Jeez .... that's just a thick 40 grade where I come from. HDEO 15W40 territory.
Thanks QP

FPF, looks like you are from a warm climate, have you considered a 15W40 HDEO like Rotella, Delo or Delvac ? They have good HTHS and tend to shear less due to their narrow viscosity spread.

Something I've definitely considered but I can't seem to find many people recommend a 15w40 for my applications because they seem to mostly be for diesel or trucks not Porsches or Saabs. I figure a 10w40 is alright then.

I think Redline 0W-40 or 5W-40 is what i would use in a Focus RS , the thing with redline is that since they have such high HTHS viscosities compared to other oils of the same grade that you should actually use a thinner oil that what is specified when running Redline.

Yeah, that should work.

Mobil 1 10W40 High Mileage (HM) is a full synthetic that's API SN and Euro ACEA A3/B3 with a HTHS of 3.9 cP.

Don't let the High Milage name put you off, I consider it a good performance oil.

Mobil 1 10W-40 Racing 4T?? Supposed to have better base stock than M1 10W-40 HM, 155 VI, 4.2 HTHS, Zddp in the 1300 range, i think it's more expensive though and only sold in quart bottles.

Yeah there are a lot of excellent oils available in the xw40 range.

I figure the two best are probably Motul 300v and Redline. The Castrol Edge 10w40 High Mileage is also something I've considered but at the same price as Redline, not sure why I should choose that.

Interestingly, the Porsche manual recommends a 0w40, 5w40 or a 5w50. My guess is that a 50 oil is probably too thick for my Saab which has a V6 turbo hence I'm probably going to use Redline 10w40 for both cars to reduce my stocking varieties.

I've been using MB229.5 LiquiMoly on the Mercedes but might switch to the Castrol Edge 0w40 or 10w40HM.

The Motul 300V is a race oil though, not meant for street use.

The redline and motul I believe are ester base where as many of the others are not. This might give cause for the higher HTHS. Id say not apples for apples. If your going to run an ester based oil in a street car....it would depend your driving style and commutes. If you do a lit of shorter interval id lower your oil change interval. Most esters based oils attract moisture......so you might want to lower your oil change interval if you run it or just use a full PAO oil.
