the 2 layers of media are definitely bonded together somehow, i had to "tear" them apart
also, i think with that screen glued to both endcaps, the aluminum center core is unnecessary

its ashamed with ALL that media it can only filter 97% at 20 microns. the Pureone does 99.9% at 20 microns, and is cheaper.

enjoy!

That is a well made filter. If Fram thinks a filter this solid is needed for long OCI, I think it indicates the extra guard and tough guard are barely adequate for regular OCI.I'd bet the center core is steel, and maybe aluminized or some other coating.

If Fram would make a filter with metal end gaps and a better bypass valve in the extra guard and tough guard line, they would have a great filter for the price.

That's what a well made filter is supposed to look like! I'd use one of those w/o hesitation. No thanks on the Orange can though.

That's about as different from a plain "orange can" Fram as you could possibly get. Not bad looking at all, although I wonder how restrictive that thick media might be versus a single layer ala PureOne or M1 filter. It also looks relatively coarse, but then you can't really tell that just by looking.

Fram has never actually forgotten how to make a good filter- their industrial filters are reasonably well-respected. They just haven't put any quality whatsoever into their lower-end consumer grade products for (at least) the past 30 years.

I got one to try in the Camry at Walmart. $.02 less than the WIX I normaly use from the auto part store. ($7.97 vs $7.99)

Thanks for buying and cutting open this filter for us. The Xtended Guard hold 30 grams of dirt. The Pureone holds 12 grams.

I installed this filter on my parents PT Cruiser last week. It has Castrol Edge in the crankcase also. I feel these two are a good one year OCI combo.

If only fram could toughen up the extra and tough guard. Lower the price on both then they would be useable for standard under 7k ocis. That filter (XG) is 8 bucks here, but it is constructed very well. That probably would be the filter I choose if I ever did a extended drain OCI, that or wix.

I think that XG filter is probably the reason they stopped selling the Mobil 1 filters at Walmart. It looks like it was designed to compete with the M1 filter.
