I just got a new to me diesel truck for trips with the family. I noticed on the oil change sticker that the last owner just had the oil changed 500 miles ago. I was going to change it when I got it home but decided to give the repair shop on the sticker a call. I acted like I was going to come in for an oil change and asked how much and what brand oil they used in diesel trucks. They use only 15w40 rotella t so I was happy with that and decided to wait untill time to service it. The machanic also told me that the truck I bought was always serviced there and he knew the owner. I will most likely keep on using the rotella.

Wow that's the first things discussed when i buy,lol

what kind of truck?

Yeah, first thing I do on any vehicle is pull every dipstick and see what the fluid looks like. Then, crawl under and inspect CV boots, etc. Then talk about maintenance.

It's a all stock 2001 Ford Excursion 4x4 with a 7.3L Powerstroke diesel. Its hard to find one not lifted or with a quarter million miles on it. Plus all the other ones I looked at had exhaust kits and chips or programmers with intakes and other [censored] I didnt want messed with.

That's a good vehicle and like you said hard to find stock with low miles. You should get some good service out of it!

I have a 2002 Ford F350 Truck with the 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel. The 7.3 Powerstroke is made for Ford by International/Navastar. These are great engines, very reliable and will last a long, long time. Just ensure you do the required maintance per the owners guide and your PSD will run great. Good luck and enjoy your Excursion.

I would add, as a precaution, keep a close eye on your oil level-as with all common rail & HEUI diesels, injector leakage will make itself known as a sudden increase in oil level-religious maintenance of fuel filters & coolant would also be a good move. The 7.3 is one of the better diesel engines to ever be installed in a light truck/SUV, right there with the Cummins.

I couldn't find a decent Excursion with a 7.3 up here.
Look into getting a by-pass filtration setup like the one Amsoil sells your injectors will last longer.
Service your trans religiously, the 4R100 does not do well when neglected.

I am loving my 6.0L Limited Excursion with quad captains chairs.

Yes I agree about the 4R100 trans. Mine was replaced before I bought it with a Jasper transmisson. I will be flushing it regularly.

Have you looked at the clearance between the bump stop and the front leaf springs? If there is less than an inch, look up V code leaf spring swap for the front and B codes for the back. The V codes do raise the front up 1.5" but at least you aren't bottoming out all the time then the B codes level it out.
