I'm Quitting Synthetic

i have said it before and i should say it again, just because an engine may have a turbo does not automatically mean the need for synth is needed.
alot (perhaps most) turbo cars have nice sized oil coolers from the factory. if the factory did their job the turbo engine would expierence the same oil tempatures as a non turbo engine, because of the oil cooler.

if you have a turbo engine with no oil cooler, then you should perhaps add one.

this post was directed to whoever up there said a turbo engine NEEDS synth oil for cooling.

While Technically (in a tube, in a lab) the Syn are better, and yes the Min cant go the same drain intervals but I have always had great results High Quality performance Mineral Oil, and many other people I have come across agree. I personally prefer to change my oil often, I get great satisfaction out of knowing that I have clean oil in a clean engine.

I have also spoken to many people who have noticed higher levels of ware with Syn in some applactions compamred to Mineral oil.

I also believe that, the really important thing is the combination of the base oil and additives that go to make up the final product. It's the appropriate additives combined with the base oil that makes the difference. eg it is very easy to make a 'bad' synthetic oil just by using the wrong type or amount of additives (just as you can make a bad mineral oil by doing the same thing). So, it is not correct to say that 'Synthetics are always better'

Don't write off the Old reliable Mineral Oils just because the broachers aren't as shinny.

The reason I use synthetic oil is because I get two to three mpg better fuel economy. With the price of gasoline, that comes out to 50-70 dollars in savings in a 6,000 mile run. It's like a free oil change and my engine runs a lot cooler. I don't see anything wrong with dino oil, there are some good quality oils out there. I feel in the long run if you are going to keep your car for a while synthetic would be the way to go.

I have heard so many good things about the USA GTX, I wish that Castrol Australia's GTX range was as good as the USA offerings. See in Australia, the GTX and GTX 2 oils are considered cheap, standard quality oils, not for the performance concisions driver at all.

The Funny thing is that Castrol as a whole does not have a very performance orientated name for it's self. it's very active in sponsor ship but as far as general public that use it in Performance engines it's not as big as it was in the 80's.

An example of this is that with GTX2 SL 20w 50, Castrol advise against using this in any performance styled engine, while it's competitors offer oils that same grade, weight and price that are well aimed at the Big V8's and Turbo 4's and mister average 6.

Funny thing is it has a good HTHS reading of 4.5.

If anyone wanted to have a look at the data sheet.

Compare that product deception with the USA GTX 20w 50 and you'll see what I mean.

I belive the Havoline stuff is a very well ballenced package and Caltex, or as you might say Texaco has done alot of work over the years to prove that some of there
engine oils with a 'mineral oil' base perform better in terms of engine
wear and handling engine deposits etc than the Synthetics.

Well if you got a nice expensive, luxury, high performance car, just want added protection then synthetic will be a good thing. Conventional oil should work fine. Yes synthetic oil is better in anyway compared to regular oil since that stuff is more expensive. I plan to switch back to conventional because my car burns oils which is a waste of money. But I hear that switching back from synthetic to regular is not good, but theres no big harmful effect in doing so.

What kind of car? how many miles?

Castrol GTX?

Enjoy the varnish and crud that will build up.

You will only care about this if you plan to run the car for a long time. (and keep it)

Synthetics keep your engine a lot cleaner(among other benefits). Again, you'll only care about this if you keep 'em a long time.
