To ask this question. Who cares.

If you unscrew your oil filter without draining your oil...does a whole bunch of oil come out after it? If I just want to change my filter about how much oil do I need to add after I change the filter?

I think it would depend on the location of the filter, as well as the size of the filter. In our Jetta, the filter is sizeable and mounted up side down below the oil cooler, so there is actually quite a bit of oil coming out when you unscrew the filter. Probably half a quart easily, maybe more.

On my 530i on the other hand, it's a top mounted cartridge insert, so the only oil lost is whatever is trapped in the filter media itself - not a lot.

My question is: why are you changing the oil filter without changing the oil?

Some oil drains out of the oil passages and from the filter depending how the filter is mounted. Maybe a cup at the most + some of the filters oil capacity depending again on how the filter is mounted. It is enough to make a mess IMO.

My manual says not to change the factory fill until the OLM says so but I think I may change the filter somewhere between 3-5k miles.

Well, I'd say either follow the OLM (wait with oil and filter change) or just change them both at 5K.

I don't really see how changing just the filter early will help with anything. If you're worried about break-in metals, they'll either be trapped in the filter (ie. not going anywhere) or be suspended in the oil, which means they're too small to do any harm anyway.

But if you do insist on just the filter change, I'd say just eyeball it - see how much oil you lose when you unscrew it and then add similar amount. In any case, it shouldn't be a whole lot.

I'd recommend an early oil and filter change at around 600-1000 miles based on the crud I see coming out of new engines. It can't hurt things, and it might just help.

change the filter out

crank up the car, make sure it has oil pressure and doesn't leak, shut it off... wait 10 seconds, check the oil on the dipstick and fill it up close to maximum... unless Honda has changed their filters and setup in 2010 or 2009, you will be alright doing this if you have a quart of oil on hand.... I'd bet you wouldn't even need half a quart.... and starting the engine up with this amount of oil missing isn't going to hurt much..

you will be perfectly alright

if you have a v6, the filters used to be mounted on the bottom of the engine pointed up... you could even pour some oil in the new filter to fill it up some before you screw it on if it makes you feel better..... it might also send oil to the engine faster if you do this as it won't have to fill the filter up all the way first before it really flows through it good.

I wouldn't change the filter. Sludge and other contaminants that would clog the filter will be non-existant. Wear metals will act just as Quattro Pete explained. I could see if you wanted to change the oil, but not the filter, but changing the filter early doesn't make much sense to me. JMO

You need to meditate on this. You obviously aren't qualified to own a Honda. You skipped the "new owner" seminar or didn't view the DVD that came with it.

Honda ZEN. You just don't have it yet. Don't touch your Honda's sump until you've reached that Honda ZEN.

Now go find a quiet room and think about it. Shed all of your western anxiety. Find inner peace and tranquility. When you're calm and confident ...low heart rate and low bp ..and have lost all desires to tinker with the simple perfection of your Honda ..then you've got it.

Good luck!

Translation: Follow the OLM

+1 on following MM. Honda is pretty insistent that the FF oil should stay as long as possible. I bought 2 new Honda's last year, and didn't change oil until MM showed 20%. According to the dealer it is better if you want until 10 or 15%. The people who say "it can't hurt" to change it early may be right, but OTOH it may not be optimal to change it early.

honda isn't out to get you man. follow what honda tells you. now for my current car there was no advice from GM. they told me to change oil and filter when OLM got zero or 1 year ... whatever came first. now i didn't follow that. i change my FF at 6000 miles which was 50% of my OLM. I change the filter at 2000 and 4000 miles though. there was HUGE amounts of metal shavings ect on the first filter change. GM told me that was normal with any new engine. Car has 31,000 miles and still runs new so i'm cool.

Gary, you should be a writer. I'd buy your books!
