I'm convinced. New favorite oil.

I did almost 7,800 mile oci on RP 5w30. As I said before engine silky, quieter and smoother sounding with that than anything I've used.

Put M1 AFE today and obviously noisier, less smooth. Sounds like I just got an exhaust leak. I used to think it was just the Ram exhaust till I used RP and noticed the difference. I'll use up my M1 stash and stick with RP. There might be something to superior base stocks after all. Hopefully they won't water it down to meet newer stricter emission fuel saving standards.

C'mon now, Mobil 1 made your car sound like it had an exhaust leak? Doubtful.

When was the last time you drove the truck? Was it warmer then? I've had oils sound differently in my older Subie, but nothing that made it seem detrimental, and a lot of it was probably season change and the fact that I was comparing old oil to new oil - memory fades quickly when it comes to something you experience every single day.

We hear all the time about this oil or that oil making the engine sound louder but this is a new one.
Personally i think its all in folks imagination.Mobil 1 is a good product.

M1 20 & 30-weight oils have produced more valve-train clatter than other oils in my experience. I've heard some Hemis with a good bit of clatter at idle, maybe it was worse with M1? Who knows...

I'm interested in trying the new higher-density M1 oils though, to see if they've addressed the "issue".

The old oil at almost 8K sounded smoother than the new oil. Usually the other way around.
Anyone that has seen my post since I joined knows I'm not an M1 basher. It's served me well. Not 30 plus years like Tig1 but a good 10 years.

i wouldnt be so quick to make that asertion. i'm not saying you're wrong, but i switched from PP to M1 AFE 0w30 this past summer, and the AFE made my engine so loud i was temped to drain it after just a few days. i threw a ZDDP additive in the sump in an attempt to quiet it down, which it did a small amount. but good lord i've never used a louder oil in my life, and when i drained it out, the oil in the catch pan almost glistened (maybe it was the iron deposits?) who knows. i'm not in any way against M1 products, i've used them in the past and liked them, and i just bought some M1 HM for next summer's OCI.

Maybe it's a bit of hyperbole on his part, but I definitely can tell the difference in how an oil sounds (loudness or whatever we are going to call it). I took out some oil once (won't mention the brand) at about 4k miles and put something else in (not going to say it either b/c I don't want to send this thread OT) and yes, the new oil was actually louder. I thought maybe it was just me, but a female that did not know her oil was changed asked me the same day why it seemed louder. I know some don't believe this. But this is my testimony and it is the truth.

Sounds better than louder engine = better oil. Don't you think?

I've noticed my car is louder at start up with certain filters when it's cold outside.

I don't know, that's why I asked. Seems to me that just because an engine is quieter doesn't necessarily mean the oil is reducing friction to a greater degree, helping the engine run cooler or trapping more contaminants compared to that of an oil the engine runs a little louder on.

Well, think of it this way... most cars are going to way outlast their owners with any name brand oil. You have to have something to go by. Might as well be loudness. lol

Using the same viscosity oil I'd perfer the oil that made my engine the quietest. Having a vehicle parked in a garage, engine noise is much easier to detect. Edge 0W20 is the clear winner for me in that category. Beating Mobil 1 0W20, PP 5W20, and Amsoil ASM 0W20. YMMV

Me too. Quiet is a step in the right direction, and you can probably have your cake and eat it too.

Glad you found an oil you like. I use Mobil1 in my MB engine with over 200,000 miles and is smooth as silk, but I do think the engine is a little noisier for the first few minutes after the oil change, after that is so smooth and quiet. Just checked the oil level earlier today and it is still where it was 6,700 miles ago. I have been pretty satisfied with M1.

Its quieter because it is better lubricated. What im confused about is how a thick oil is better in some apps (old cars.) Or why thin oil is better in new cars. Other than that, less noise = more cushioned. Unscientific as all [censored], but noisy = BAD! M1, or not.

It will help to think of other non-M1 Oils that are LOUD! for comparison, and to show its not always M1 that is the whipping boy.

FWIW, i can second the experience of Klutch9 of having Oil drain out from a pan that looked VERY glisteny... ...which was not repeated on other oils. Wasnt Mobil 1, but it happened. Additive was involved, but still.. He is not making it up. It is, as they say.. an Unsolved Mystery.
