For example, On LinkedIn, how are one's connections/followers counts all different?

Linked is the only "social media" I do, because I have done projects all over the place with all kinds of different people and like to keep in touch somehow. I have over 800 "connections" - almost all of which I have met in person, but no followers, because I never post anything. I only send individual messages - like happy work anniversary or new job or whatever. So if anyone followed me they would get nothing anyway.

A guy I work at is posting articles and stuff all the time, and he has 1000 followers. I guess that makes him an "influencer" ?

Over the past few months, I've received messages saying that so-and-so is now following me. What does that mean? Is there a way to see who's following me? Can I discourage, or stop, someone from following me?

Its harmless.
if you go into your settings you can turn off the notification of someone following you.

Starts following you

• Alert
• Push

click on your name at the top right of screen
then
click preferences
then
scroll down to bottom and uncheck the 2 options of "starts following you"
