If you had to choose 1 oil and the only visible spec was....

Ok, 2 quarts of Synthetic 10w30 oil in unmarked containers.

One has a "CI-4" rating, the other has an "ACEA A3" rating, that's it.

Which oil do you choose to put in a gas, V6 truck engine for 5,000 OCI's?? And why! (temp 35f-112f)

Well, I haven't followed the different ACEA ratings and such ..but I'll tell you if I ran into a synth in the USA that meets CI-4 specs in a 10w30 ..I would doubt the label if it was sold south of the Canadian border ..or didn't have an Amsoil label. Amsoil is the only synth that I know of south of the boarder that has a CI-4 rating and isn't a 5w-40.

Was this a trick question???

Both are probably overboard for such an application, but I guess I'd chose the A3 one, unless it was a sludge producing motor.

No it's not a trick question, and it's certainly not AMSOIL!

I'd rather not say what 2 oils I'm deciding on, but one is sort of green, and the other is sort of purple.

P.S. I know the green one is a 0w-30, I asked about 10w30 because thats the viscosity of the purple one!

Myself, I'd pick the ACEA one without knowing anything about the truck or usage.

You know, that's interesting. There are several common dino CI-4 oils in 10W30, but no common synthetics that I know of. Hmmm...

If the oil ONLY had a CI-4 rating, then I would not use it in a gas engine. CI-4 is only suitable when accompanied by the appropriate gas engine rating.

According to their website, Redline's 10w30 is CI-4 rated.

Strange, I just drained out some GC and put some 10w30 RP in. I am doing an Analysis on both to see which works better for me.

I have 2 diesel trucks so the CI spec is a must for me, and is also works super in a spark plug engine.
The other problem is my AZ does not carry the Green and the Purple is $4.29 and API approved and available locally.

I'd definitely go for the ACEA A3 or A3/B3 or the new C3. That's largely because I like the higher HTHS.

As for the Why(?). Even though my engines are not high performance I figure if the A3 holds up and protects well under such grueling conditions it'll have an easy chore of protecting them. In other words, just a tad overkill on protection.

Thanks to you all! I was just trying to get a feel for different opinions regarding the A3 & CI-4 spec,
while trying to keep personal preferences about the oil brands themselves to a minimum.

Obviously, I'm choosing between GC and Royal Purple 10w30

CI-4 is for diesels only, unless it also has a gasoline engine spec on the label.

ACEA A3 is their toughest gasoline engine oil spec.

Go A3.

I'd want ACEA A3 - and ACEA B4, to get the added detergency needed for TDI diesel applications. Very useful in any long drain application as well....
