If you bought a new vehicle today?

If you purchased a new car today and planned to handle all the oil and filter services yourself, what would be your oil change schedule, mileage interval, and preferred brands for oil and filters? For my personal vehicles, I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum oil and a mix of Carquest, Mircoguard, Fram endurance, and Mobil filters. Years ago I used Mobil oil and purolator filters.
New vehicle off the lot, OE filters and whatever oil that meets manufacturers requirements. would stick with 6mon/5K oci's. if it were a turbo i would stick with Mobil 1, Castrol Edge or Pennzoil Platinum and still follow 6mon/5K oci's. Once warranty is out i would source whatever filters i get cheap in bulk.

You have the exact same conditions as me(mountainous terrain). Options 1 or 2 would be my choice. Option 2 is what I did for my oil burner Subaru.
Thank you. I plan to keep up with the VRP process. My Crosstrek hasn't shown any signs of oil consumption, as I regularly check the oil level to ensure consistency. I decided to implement VRP as a preventative measure to avoid excessive carbon buildup. Could you please explain the key differences between M1 ESP and PUP?

I've run this experiment so many times now, I know what works for me.

I change at 1000, 5000 and every multiple of 5000.

25,000, 30,000, 35,000, etc. I use a quality synthetic like Mobil 1 EP and go on my way without worry if I pass the 35000 mile mark a little if I am on a long trip. I simply don't adjust. Next change at 40,000.

The oil always comes out clean, the engines last well into the hundreds of thousands of miles, and I don't have any of the common oil related wear problems (like timing chain wear) that others seem to have. That is no surprise, I'm not circulating dirty oil for thousands of miles.

Bought brand new in May 2025, my F150 Hybrid.

200 miles on the truck and we towed our 6600# camper for a weekend trip, changed oil at 1000 with VRP 5W30 and then went on a 4000+ mile trip to SD and back, changed the oil at a little over 5K with VRP, and will continue on with 5K changes of VRP.

Same basic thing I did with the Ranger except the oil choice was a bit different, and I didn't beat the pants off of it right out of the gate.

I don't like to stock a bunch of different oils and I have been running 5w30 in the two Honda cars forever now, so everything will get VRP from here on out since I buy the 20qt boxes.

2024 Lexus GX550 purchased new, used whatever 0w20 or 5w30 full synthetic with Supertech oil filters. But I just bought a case of fram ultras from rockauto

5,000 mile intervals for the oil and filter. Castrol or Valvoline oil and for the filter it just depends on what good one I can find for a reasonable price.

I’d run a full synthetic meeting the manufacturers recommended specifications for around 5k-7k miles. Filter would need to have holes instead of louvers.

Agree totally.

Got my 2026 bmw M440i (3.0 turbo) on July 15th. Changed oil and filter at 1050 miles. Original oil was 0w12. Went with 0w20, and thinking about Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 for the regular use in the car.

I bought a 2022 Odyssey new and I'm running clearance oil( Castrol Edge HM and CQ Synthetic) and bulk (Bosch and Hengst) filters from Rock Auto.

2024 Toyota R4 hybrid.

100mi dumped Factory oil.
500 oil and filter.
500 oil and filter. Still crap in oil.
1k oil and filter.
2.5 k oil and filter.

No I'm at 3K intervals or less depending on my severe driving.

Using Kirkland 0w 20 and super tech filters.

This little four banger 2.5 runs like a well-oiled machine.

I'm in this boat and about to use Mobil 1 0W20 (factory recommended) with the factory PF63 at about 1,000 miles. The first change is free at Chevy (mfg not dealer), but, I think I'm going to do yet another one when the OLM says about 40%, which I will not reset. I may try to do an interval change to the factory recommended one during warranty. I'm a bit sensitive as this is a 2025 L87 (6.2)

A few months ago, we bought what we hope to be our last car (we're getting old), a Honda Pilot. I fretted over what oil to use, how often to change it, etc. Decided to go with Amsoil Signature Series and their synthetic media filters. Did the first oil change at 500 miles, then again a few weeks later after a 4k miles' trip. Sent samples for UOA at both.

After spending way too much time on this forum, I drank the HPL Kool-Aid, and during their Independence Day sale, bought enough PPPCMO oil to last for several years. Even with the discount, it wasn't inexpensive, but I wanted "the best".

Neither the Amsoil SS or HPL have API certification. I know it doesn't really matter, but Honda calls for API SN or higher certification, so I have my completely unfounded concerns about "what if something happens to the engine and I'm not using the correct spec oil?".

Had I to do it over again, I'd run down to Walmart and grab a few jugs of Mobil 1 ESP X2 (with API donut) and change the oil every 5,000 miles, keeping all receipts for oil/filter purchases if changing the oil yourself.

As for filters, I bought a case of the Pentius PLXL7317 UFXL (Ultra Flow Extended Life). Their construction seems to be almost identical to the Carquest Premium Guard filter mentioned earlier.
