If I'm going to run a fuel injection cleaner on my car, should I do it right before my next oil change or after?

IIRC ages ago people were noticing higher lead readings in UOA's of cars that had run Techron just before an oil change. It probably doesn't really matter, but out of habit, I do it before.

I have used Techron in the middle of the OCI and never really thought about whether it could get past the rings. However it makes sense (or maybe superstition sense) to run the cleaner before the OC, just in case it gets past.

I have absolutely no data on this, just one of those "sounds good to me things." I run a bottle of cleaner a tank or 2 before the oil change.

Stop running bad gas and you would not think you need fuel system cleaner. What you think fresh gasoline is? That right, fuel system cleaner. :giggle:

Since your primary intention is to "clean", don't give a 2nd thought to whether to use it before or after an oil change. Use it before. And another bottle after.

For me it is just whenever. Probably not necessary but have been doing it for years. Why stop now.

Detergent gasoline is just that, it has cleaning substances in it. I have never had any fuel injection cleaner make any type of difference at all, in any way. If you do run it, just run it. IMHO Techron would be your best choice since many garages use it.

I feel like we over complicate things here, and spread fear with our anal retentive responses.

I just go by the mileage - if it's due, I put in a bottle. Sometimes it's right before, sometimes it's right after sometimes it's mid-cycle.

2 of the 4 vehicles in the fleet have over 100,000 miles, one of the retired vehicles had over 160,000 miles when I retired it due to electrical issues, and I haven't noticed any problems.

Techron is a detergent additive, correct? Just a concentrated package.
Correct.

Right, all gasoline has some minimum detergent. Top Tier has a higher concentration. And an additive would take you beyond that.
When used at the prescribed dose Techron additive has been said it results in a mix that has 10x the concentration of their pump gas (which is top tier).
So, off-brand gas may have 1x concentration ... Chevron pump gas 3x concentration...+Additive likely has 30x concentration.

Its all relative, the good fuel system cleaners do have a bit more tech to justify use. Techron being one of them.
The products labeled as just injector cleaners are generally less quality. You want Techron Complete fuel system cleaner.

We tend to over complicate things yes, but the OP asked a question...so the prevailing concept is its best to use before oil change.
Doing otherwise is fine too.

I use 2L of Klean Strip Lacquer thinner in a full tank of gas. My cars love it gas mileage always goes up afterward.
