I was not aware that ImageShack is no longer free

I really wish this forum would allow uploads of images. Many of the valuable postings here have images and since they are external, often times they vanish.

would you pay them 20$ a year for this?

the bandwidth costs for the forum would go up by 100x I'm guessing.

unless they limited it to low quality photos.... and people would use external links anyway for good photos.

ImageShack used to be free for years, too, until recently. Who's to say PhotoBucket won't follow?

Often times links die because the user chooses to delete their photos/albums or move photos to a different album, not realizing the effect it has on photos posted in the past. This goes for any free or paid image hosting site.

PB has gotten lamer-- they compress my photos and limit to 800 px. The interface is also engineered for maximum clicks and ads.

But the price is right and my links from years back still work.

Yup. That's why I resize mine to 800 pixels before I upload to PB. They don't compress these.

Flickr, Picasa, or Imgur will be around for another 10 years.

edit: I use Picasa for my photos here and luckily pay the old rates for additional photo storage (Legacy plan
20 GB @ $5.00/year)(9.3 GB 25% used 36 GB total storage), since I bought in before Google changed the pricing. New rates are on their site. Otherwise its free for the 3 Internet sites listed and then their is the paid version where you get a greater amount of storage and options.

Yeah they do! Download your viewable version and check file sizes. Unless you have pro.

Ive advocated for a DIY forum in the past for this reason. Even if most must bring their photos to the table, for certain stuff that is universally beneficial and worth archiving, it would be nice.

But bandwidth management is essential too.

I have the free account and I just checked - they're all the same file size as originally uploaded. Maybe if you're trying to upload something that's 1 MB in size, then they'll downcompress it.

Well, I thought the same about the ImageShack too few years ago. I have now moved to Imgur but I have a feeling unless a big guy buys them, they too will eventually go paid or broke.

A value of a forum is the contribution and the information contained in it. Text and associated media constitute the information content. For images, currently there is no clear cut winner as far as free + easy access is concerned. For videos, youtube is defacto leader.

I really do not believe that oil porn is going to swamp the bandwidth of this server :-)

imgur isn't without issues, either. First, it strips all EXIF data from your images. Second, there is this little tidbit:

Quote:
How long do you keep the images?
As long as images are getting at least 1 view every 6 months, they will stick around forever. After that, your image may be removed to create more space for newer images.

And finally this:
Quote:

How many images can I upload?

Infinity images can be uploaded from a single user, but only 225 will be associated with a standard account. After 225, older images will be hidden, meaning you can no longer manage or delete them from within your account until you remove other images

Although I've read somewhere that if you break them up in separate albums, then each individual album can be up to 225, thus overcoming this limit. Not sure if true or not.

Looks like Picasa would be best bet given it is owned by Google but I was not too thrilled with its interface for using it as a placeholder for images to be posted to BITOG. Let us face it, I don't post images anywhere else. Meguairs forum provide their own storage but they were (and are) a big company and understand that the forum is strategic importance to them.
